Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Should I be worrying?

I've recently got my dwarf lop bugys a friend from a rescue centre. Joey is a rex and is settling in to the family lovely, eating everything in sight! Running around and flopping everywhere. However yesterday i notice he has developed a bald spot on his head near one of his ears. Is this something to worry about (i've never had a rex before and you can really notice it because of his fur). or should I just keep an eye on it?

Thanks for any help given!

Does he live with Bugsy? Sometimes rabbits overgroom each other - I've heard that giving them a big bundle of fresh hay every day stops them doing this too much.

Yes they live together, and groom each other quite alot. They have a full hay rack, and extra hay in there litter trays. His seems fine in himself i just panic about my babys all the time!

When I got Jemima, Teddy got bald spots and scabs where she'd been mounting him and pulling his fur. It's calmed down now so as long as there's no 'fighting' I wouldn't worry too much, just keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't get any bigger

Could it be a bald spot from a reaction to his vaccinations at the rescue centre (if he got them)? Part of the myxi jab is given at the base of the ear

I checked the condition and is fine. Its smooth with no scars or scabs, they were both fine last night being naughty together as normal. He did get all his injection at rescue centre, if it is a reaction to injections does he need to see a vet to you think?

Hi. My rex developed mysterious bald spot on her head a few months ago. Another appeared shortly after on the other side of her head and both areas eventually looked most peculiar as it looked as though she had eyebrows. I'll post a couple of pics for you. The skin looked totally normal..no flaking or redness at all but I took her to the vet just in case. Mites and ringworm were ruled out , the hair grew back in and we never got to the bottom of the mystery. She began a heavy moult shortly afterwards and now I wonder if it was just a precursor to that. Here are the pics:

It then developed into a line on both sides of her head ab0ve the eyes

I don't think so. It is worth having it checked out just to rule out mites and ringworm though.

Hi, Capel, those bald spots look identical to ones my little blue boy had, he wasn't a rex just a mini lop. The vet said it was alopecia (sp?) and nothing to worry about, again we ruled out mites, worms, fleas etc. He would lose the odd patch and then it grew back, but he was always worse when stressed, it first happened when I went away for the weekend. The vet said there was nothing to worry about, I just put some aloe on to make me feel better about doing something! And at that point he was living on his own so it def wasn't overgrooming! He couldn't reach between his own ears! x Jess
