Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lump on leg - is it broken? - turns out it was an abscess

I was putting my rabbit back in his cage tonight and he jumped and did a kind of side flip. Later I noticed he has a lump on his hind right leg...I am concerned it could be broken. (It was definately not there last night)

Does anyone know if this could be the case?

A fracture is a possibility. Your Rabbit needs Veterinary attention ASAP. Hopefully the leg is not broken but we cant tell you for CERTAIN one way or the other.

Good Luck

Thanks, I will take him in today. Just nice to be able to share it with you all and get advice - even if it is not definative :)

Thanks!

Turns out the lump was an abscess! Petshop had him housed with Guinea Pigs - I knew he had some scabs, and I noticed there was a rather large one on his leg earlier...seems it got infected.

Now Jack is going in for both neutering and abscess surgery on Monday.

Poor Jack...he has a cone on because after the investigated his wound, he kept licking at it and the vet was worried he would worsen it. Poor guy looks so pathetic trying to eat and walk around :(

We were so lucky with our previous rabbits...no health problems at all. I've had poor Jack barely a week and already looking at over $500 CDN dollars of expenses!

Good thing he is so cute and lovable! ;)

oh poor lad :( You will need to feed him his caecal poops by hand if he's wearing a cone or his tum will get upset, especially if he's on antibiotics. It's best to keep the abscess open as it will need to be cleaned out frequently if the pus builds up again (which it usually does)
