Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Scratched eye

I've just got back from the vets with Frizby as I noticed last night that one of his eyes was red, so I checked on it again this morning and it was all pussie, and his fur around the eye was crusty....ergh:(

I was worried it was an infection, so the vet squirted some orange stuff in his eye which highlighted problem area......

It showed Frizby has quite a big scratch down the side of his left eye....we think Rockie may of done it while they're being bonded in the run, but purely by accident as she has been good with him recently.

Has anyone had this before and how long did it take for it to heal? I have some eye drops for him

I've not had it in a rabbit but I've had a scratched cornea myself! It really hurts and it took a good month or two to heal up.

I've always found that Optrex eyewash (or the Boots own brand) is really good with eye problems in small animals. It is very soothing for them and seems to help clear any problems up.

Thanks, sounds painful

The vets have given me a small tube of creamy eye drop stuff, Frizby is taking it like a true man and is not putting up a fight at all:D

Rex got a scratch on his eye - needed eyedrops for about a week or two I think? You could see the 'scar' on it afterwards but his vision seemed fine and he had no other problems with it :)

My bunny Parsley had the same thing. He got a big scratch across his eye and he had to get cream from the vets, that was applied twice a day. It took several months to clear completely but he was perfectly fine after:) Good luck to your bunny

Thanks, maybe its the same stuff as the eye treatment I have got has to be applied twice daily, one drop in the morning and one in the evening. In a way I'm glad it was Frizby that got the scratch as he is such a calm and relaxed bunny, if it had been Rockie I think world war 3 would of broken out by just trying to look at the eye, let alone put stuff in it!

 Parsley was a right pain to hold down and put the stuff in his eye. Me and my mum would have to fight him everyday:lol: But considering how painful it must have been, he was a good boy really. Bless him

Last year Smudge got a piece of hay caught in her eye and it scratched it and only just missed her cornea. She had drops and the vet gave her painrelief and that fortunately helped her perk up and eat and she didn't go into GI stasis.
