Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

moulting/shedding out?

rabbitabby

Alpha Buck
At the end of his healing phase from his neuter, I noticed that Crue started to go into his "that part of year" moult/shed phase.

I have heard that hairballs can cause GI stasis but have also heard that hairballs are a myth? While I am familiar enough and somewhat versed in knowledge with stasis, I am at a loss with actual hairballs.

He, like all rabbits, is a very clean bun and is constantly licking and cleaning himself whenever he has a spare moment aside from the romping and binkying and tossing and chewing and and and.. you know.

Is there anything I can do to aid in him in this time of moult? Anything preventative to prevent getting "gummed up" inside?

I know there is petromalt for rabbits and I DO have some tube of Peters "Rabbit Lax" but have never used it.. its been sitting around as it was in a gift basket of items that I recieved from Petco when I adopted Crue..

Thanks for anything in advance!!

I've never heard of fur blocking a rabbit being a myth... I've always just accepted it as being true. A couple of times when Barney has been shedding, he's almost gone in GI Stasis. He's shedding at the moment, and I'm combing him twice a day to get rid of some of the fur... Luckily he seems to really enjoy this. But, also, I'm making sure he's eating a lot of grass when out, and when he's in his hutch I'm keeping the hay topped up. :) I've also heard that pineapple/papaya chunks or juice can be used at this time, as there are enzymes in both which help break down any fur blockage.
