Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vet Costs - Ouch!

I phoned up the vet this morning to book my bunnies in for their first lot of jags. I thought I may as well get the price of everything whilst I had someone on the phone.

Myxi and VHD jags - £60
This is the total for both bunnies plus a consultation. So I thought that seemed fine.

Neutering - £70 each
I got a shock. I was assuming about £35 each. I double checked with her and told them they were both males but she said this is what i costs now.

It is better to get them neutered isnt it?

Got any other vets near you? Those are top prices for jabs and Scotland is usually cheaper for vets bills that here in the south.

ouch again, i only have to pay £16.70 odd for mixi and VHD and i dont pay a consultation fee and the fee for the neutering i was quoted was £56, our vets are excellent and well known for being one of the best in our area - does anyone else pay such high prices? is your vet a specialist in certain animals?

Yes much better the neuter the buns for many reasons, for me its to stop him spraying (in case he starts spraying!)

I think I pay about £25 for a vaccination, plus the appointment :D I paid £45 for Trips neuter, but the girls spays cost £130 and £170. At the same vets and within 2 weeks of each other :? My vets dont seem to have anyone that knows much about rabbits at all but you dont get much choice over here. I have just seen a different one last week at the same practice though and he seems promising

Sounds a bit expensive, I pay about £40 for both jabs and £60 for neuters (£70 for a spay) here and my vets are a bit on the pricey side (but very good which is why I don't mind paying!)

I paid £11.75 for mixi and another £11.75 for vhd that included a consulation full health check and weighing. Not sure how much neuturing is yet.

There is another vets I know of which is a little further away but I'll phone them tomorrow just to compare prices.
Just wasnt expecting the cost to be that much!

I pay £11.75 for a myxi jab and the same for a VHD. Neutering and spaying are BOTH £30 :D

I wouldnt just go to another vet because its cheaper if you are already confident with the vet your seeing now, we all know how hard it is to find vets that are experienced with rabbits so the most important thing really is making sure your using a bunny savvy vet :D

i second that if yours buns are ok with you current vet stick with them:D

My bunnies havent yet saw a vet at all, they are only 13 weeks. I wouldnt put the bunnies health at risk for the sake of money but at the end of the day I can only take the vets word that they not what they are doing.

What I do is ask them as many questions as I can and remember what they say, then when I get home search for the answers on here to see if they are right  Mostly just questions about diet, vaccinations and general healthcare ;) One vet recommended I feed a mixed food rather than the pellets I was buying from the surgery and another told me to starve Scarlett before her operation  So I didnt see them again

It costs about £1.60 ish for the vhd jab and about £4.50 ish to buy the myxi jab so thats a lot of profit! I'd be careful about paying such high fee's, no-one minds paying a fair price but I wouldn't want to be ripped off like that.

i spoke to friends & family before taking bun to the vets so i could get an idea of their reputation, the cheaper vet could be 100x better than the expensive! have a chat with some of your friends who have pets see which vet they go to and that may help with your decision either way im sure you buns will be fine and dandy!:)

Ouch! I thought my vets were expensive (but Anita is worth her weight in gold) £55 castration and £63 spey, dont even want to think about jab costs

My vets are fab though and I wouldnt change them for the world despite, I suspect, being royally ripped off by the owners.

Where in Scotland are you? If you are anywhere near Glasgow I can give you the details of the vet I use which aren't as expensive as yours and I trust with my bunnies.

I'm 5 minutes from Motherwell. I have a few vet numbers to phone today, so I'll see what the difference is.

Well managed to find a vet that did the neutering for £50, out of four thats the cheapest I've found. They all seem to be charging around £30 for both jags though!

I rang our local vet before taking my rabbit for her spay and was quoted £80-£87 depending on weight! Is this normal? However, on collecting her they charged me £96!

I was a bit flustered in the surgery and should have queried it at the time but I had lots of other questions going around in my head!

I'll be popping back to ask for a breakdown of the cost.

my old vets which il be using for neutering and jabs because my new ones expensive! charge £30 for both jabs and £44 for a neutering and about £55 for a spey im surprised its not more as i supposedly live in a posh area
