He's having his front teeth out for the second time and I will be a basket case all day worrying about my boy.
To recap his story for those that don't know it.... a tenant moved out of a house and when the landlord went in, there were 80 bunnies there, all in a really bad state   :censored: There were open wounds from fights and flies/maggots from all the faeces  . some had to be pts straightaway as they were so bad, the surviving ones have major genetic problems, mainly respiratory and teeth related
Spike had his wonky front teeth removed but they've grown back. His Vet has warned me that there's always a risk of losing a bun under anaesthetic (around 1 in a 1000) but for these bunnies the risk is greater and is probably more like 1 in 5-100
Spike now needs his front teeth burring evry 3-4 weeks and the Vet is impressed with his condition *proud Mum moment  *. As he feels Spikes condition is well enough to cope, we're going for the second removal and he can check the back teeth as well whilst he's under GA.

So major vibes needed, pretty please

Aww! I know what you mean! I'm always a bag of nerves when ever my animals are sick and need to be put under... No one can get any sense out of me, or much conversation at all really...

Lots of vibes sent your & Spike's way.

Spike is now on my knee as I type this..he's still a bit spacey after the GA. I've to make sure he eats and that may mean syringe feeding him recovery later.... I hate doing that.. I'l try soft balls first and hope he takes them.

Vets tomorrow evening for his post op.

He says thanks for all the well wishes

Spike you make sure you eat a bit tonight so as your poor stressed Mum can stop worrying about you so much. Oh, and do TRY not to grow any new Incisors this time!!

update 6th July... Spike was fine yesterday but whilst I've been at work, he hasn't eaten a single thing or done a single poo   So we're back from the Vets where he was given metaclop and syringe fed. I'm really, really nervous of syringe feeding after Siouxsie chin died in my hand as I was syringe feeding her    yes I know she was 15 years old and poorly but I can't get over that

Please send eating vibes to my very special bunster

I can quite understand why you are nervous of having to syringe feed Spike but I KNOW you will be OK doing so if you have to.

I always give syringe feeds horizontally across Buns mouth so as the food does not go straight down their throat. Wrapping the Bun up nice and securely in a towel helps too. It is often best to even have their eyes covered so as just their nose and mouth is poking out. That way they feel safe and dont get frightened by seeing the syringe approaching.

Even if Spike wont take something like Critical Care or Science Recovery you may have more luck with a 100% Veggie baby food or a home made veggie puree. Its not as good as the CC or SR as it does not contain as much fibre. But its better than nothing and some Anorexic Buns can be tempted to eat if they get started on some veggie baby food.

Still sending extra special vibes for Spike

Funny you should say that Jane... I've just pulverised a carrot to try to make carrot juice.
I don't know who's more stressed with the syringe.. him or me

After being syringe fed by the Vet Nurse last night, Spike managed to only eat 2 strands of grated carrot so we've been back today for more syringing  He's like a naughty child that won't eat his food.... he has one syringe full, you see his cheeks going, then he flatly refuses to swallow any more  we're back for another feed (having to trawl round 3 diffrent Vet's today  ) at 3 pm.
He has a bowl of pellets, grated carrot, celery, coriander, parsley, rose petals, strawberry leaves, carrot tops, banana, bread, recovery slop, all at his disposal and he ain't interested in any

Awww hun Ill try sending some extra special vibes. I know this is different but I had to syringe feed a little baby bunny not long ago, every two hours for ten days. My vet wasnt at all hopeful but she did pull through :D Have you tried the HIPP Carrot and sweetcorn baby food mixed in with the recovery food ? Dotty did the same after one syringe full but when I added some of the baby food she improved over a few feeds. Thinking of you xx

A revelation tonight after yet another unsuccessful attempt at syringe feeding on my part. Spike and Rusty were outdoor bunnies but since Rusty died, Spike has been spending most of his time in the house. He's now totally litter trained in the house but not the hutch  ... think there's a message there......
He sleeps under my bed and it's so cute to be woken by the patter of furry feet on the bed :) .However, he views under the bed as his warren and is almost impossible to coax from under there. As a result, since his op, I've not allowed him in the bedroom as I need to catch him to feed him. I've laid on an array of goodies for him in the lounge to no avail. I gave in and let him in the bedroom and put the bowl of food, herbs, carrots etc. under the bed and whoosh! he was chowing down straightaway. :D He's not polished it all off but has done really well so I guess what I've learnt is, that it's not what you feed them but where...... he definitely views under hte bed as his warren and feels the most comfortable there
I can't express the relief I felt on seeing the food go down his little mouth :D

Hi Jill, that was really interesting. I suppose he's probably quite traumatised by the surgery etc and feels secure enough in his "warren" to eat. He knew that all along, but none of us ever so clever humans thought of it!!!!! Another valuable hint from an RU member:) , so thanks for passing it on, Jill. Spike is such a clever Bunster:lol:
