View Full Version : Sunflower Comp. - RESULTS ARE IN!
Bavarian Bunny
02-07-2007, 03:27 PM
As the weather is not all that great at the moment, I thought I’d start a sunny summer competition instead. I currently have a giant sunflower growing in the garden and I want you to guess its final height.
The money from this competition will help ARC to neuter and vaccinate some of the many new bunnies that arrived at the rescue during the last two months. These include Lady Jane and Theodora and their babies, plus all the Dutch bunnies that were rescued from a garage not too long ago.
I will post photos of last year’s and this year’s sunflower shortly, and your task is to guess how tall this year’s sunflower will be when the flower head is completely open. I will measure the plant from the ground to the highest tip of the flower. I can’t predict how long it will take for the flower to open, but at the moment it is just a small bud of about 2 inches, which means that this competition will run for a couple of weeks.
The prizes are donated by the Hay Experts and me. The winner will be the person who’s guess comes closest to the actual height that I will measure.
1st prize: a 20 Pound gift voucher for the Hay Experts online shop
2nd prize: a colourful bunny wall hanger, kindly donated by Romy:
http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?t=97394
3rd to 10th prize: two seed packs of various flowers, so that you can add some colour to your own garden
In order to take part in this competition, please post your guess (the final height in centimetres please) here. Each guess costs 2 Pounds, 3 guesses cost 5 Pounds. For payment, please send a PM to me (Janice is not online for a few days). You can pay vial Paypal or send a cheque.
If there is a tie between two or more players, I will draw the winner between them. The same happens if the sunflower should get damaged by a storm, slugy, squirrels, beavers, parakeets or whatever else finds its way into our garden. Then everyone’s name will go in the hat, and I will draw 10 names from it.
Any questions? Anything I have forgotten to mention? Just let me know. Please help the bunnies at ARC. And good luck with your guesses!

Just to give you an idea how tall giant sunflowers grow, here's a photo of last year's plant, surrounded by various other types of sunflowers (I can't help it, I'm a botanist  ):

And here is this year's sunflower, in the centre of the photo. I took the photo yesterday. As you can see, it has quite a thick stem already, while the flower bud is still small, so I am hoping for some more height in the next few weeks. The only hint I will give you, is that the trellis behind the sunflowers is 180 cms tall. :D

I have no idea which variety it is. The original plant came from a little bag of seeds for children, it just said "giant sunflower" on it. :D

That was quick, Maizy! Thanks. :D But I guess after Friday you won't have any money left, right?
The problem is that if you don't buy tons of plants then there will be room in your car, which means I can buy some plants, too. But my garden is full!!! So it's better if you buy lots and I save my money.

Hopefully Rosie comes up with a good guess. So far she has been to busy knocking me off 1st place in my other quiz.
The next few days will be warmer and with a but more sunshine, so that should all some more height to the plant.

You can't do much better, anyway. The animal quiz today was far too easy. I was just very slow in reading the questions, as I didn't have enough sleep last night.
Update on the sunflower: it is doing very well, and the flower head is now getting bigger and starting to lean onto the side of the stem. I watered it well today. maybe I should push some fertiliser sticks into the ground around it, too. :D

Whenever the flower is completely open. I can't really predict when that will be, but it's not very big yet, so it may take another 2 weeks or so. I'll post updates.

How is the sunflower doing, has all this rain been effecting the heigh??
Bavarian Bunny
20-07-2007, 05:43 PM
The sunflower has survived this mornings heavy rain, it is still standing strong and reaching out for the sky. :D I will need a ladder to measure it, and then fall in the pond.
The flower has not started to open yet, it may need more sunshine. So you have some more days to enter the competition.

Hey, you can ask Oscarbunny, her grandmother has the same name as me. :D BUt if she tells she has to play. We have 10 prizes, but only 9 players, so she'd be a definite winner. And we would have raised a nice 50 Pounds then. :D
Maybe I should go and get my hair cut first....

By the way, as we have only 9 players, I have decided to give the person in 3rd place 5 packets of seeds instead of 2. :D
And don't think you can get away by putting the seeds in your garage and forgetting about them. I want photos of the plants and updates, and you have to protect them from slugs and other damage. And no, you can't eat them! :D

Yes, it was a bit disappointing considering that the first prize is really useful for every bunny owner. Oh well, we have raised 45 Pounds, which will help ARC buy food or get one bunny neutered etc., so it's not bad. Everything counts.
Thanks everyone who played in this competition!

Yay, Photobucket is back. So here is a photo of the sunflower, taken just before measuring it yesterday afternoon. That's me hiding behind it, so you can get an idea of how tall the plant is. :D

So here are the results from the sunflower jury. :D (It's GISELA, by the way. Every letter just once, and no Z. )
The final height is a probably less than last year's, because the weather has been so lousy.
It is: 288 cms
Which means that no one got the height exactly correct. But some of you have guessed quite well. So here are the winners:
The 1st prize, a 20 Pound gift voucher for the Hay Experts, goes to:
Birdiebun ! (7 cms off with a guess of 295 cms) Congratulations! (I'll PM you later abuot how to redeem your voucher)
The 2nd prize, a lovely bunny wall hanger donated by Romy, goes to:
Doncat (13 cms off, 275 cms) Hope you like it! (PM BinkyBun so that she can post it to you)
The 3rd prize, 5 packets of plant seeds, goes to:
Maizy (16 cms off, 272 cms)
Everyone else will receive two packets of seeds each (please PM me your address so I can post them)
4: Louise and Gus
5: Soad
6: Rosie Rabbit
7: Bunnymonster
8: BinkyBun
9: Kim106
There you have it. I hope you had fun and thank again for helping ARC! :D

Ok, all put aside for you. I don't think there are giant sunflower seeds in that pack, but I can send you some from our sunflower last year. I can't guarantee that they will germinate, but it is worth a try. Maybe I can get some seeds from this year's too.

I only have one sunflower left in the garden now, and it is bigger than the competition plant. It does not have any big flower, yet, just lots of little buds. There is no central flower at the top, either, maybe the snails have eaten that off at some point. It is a very strange plant.
