  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Poorly ear - please advise

When Jamie and Kitt had their little two for all the other week I think there was a bit of scratching and, as a result, both of them have a few scratches. The vet checked these when they went to have their vaccinations and he was satisfied that they were healing ok.

Today on looking at Kitt it is definately healing but the lump around it has grown in size, she doesn't appear to be in any obvious pain and is her usual self.

I'm thinking I shall have to take her to the vets tomorrow, but can anyone advise what this could be? Is this expected? And is the vets avoidable as it's possibly part of the hearing process?

xx

Also.. when it comes to washing the buns (as they're a bit smelly... they clean themselves and each other, but not too well)... what should I use?

It sounds like one of the scratches might have a little infection trapped in it - the vet will probably give you some antibiotics for it if that's the case.

Thank you for replying Jocelyn.

I'm going to phone the vet in the morning and get an appointment, at least she can have a complete assessment while we're there, even if there is nothing wrong with her ear... or if it's just the scab healing.

She didn't seem to mind the vet last time we went, bless her.

I couldn't get her in today, so she's going in first thing tomorrow... fingers crossed she's ok.

They smell of really strong hay... it's not too bad I guess, but it gets worse, lol.

if it's just a hay smell then i'd leave them be. Washing rabbits isn't advised unless they have had diarrhoea and need help cleaning themselves up.
