Serious shedding???

Dustbunny

Warren Scout
Hey there i just joined as I had a question I needed to ask about shedding.

Dustbunny (a gray netherland dwarf, not a lop tho) has been shedding loads recently. I realize this is normal as it's getting into the summer months, but recently i've been trying to pull the hair out with a brush in order that he doesn't ingest the shedded hair. unfortunately, the brush hasn't worked much at all, even with very loose hair. SO, i've started gently pulling out hair with my fingers where it appears to be in severe excess. last night, however, I went overboard accidentally, and before I knew it, dustbunny had a bald spot roughly 2in in diameter (?) on his belly by his rear left leg. The thing was, none of the fur I pulled out resisted, nor did dustbunny even look at me funny or flinch when I gently pulled all of this fur. I've obviously stopped pulling the hair, but was wondering if this was OK/ normal? he's been acting totally normal recently, but i've been thinking about this for a while and am slightly worried. could I get some reassurance/advice? thanks so much!!!

Hi and welcome :D

I tend to get a bit carried away sometimes 'grooming' one of my bunnies too, resulting in bald patches. But don't worry, it is never been a problem and the new coat soon grows through. :)

Mine are shedding like mad as well. Oli permanently looks like he's been dragged through a hedge backwards and every time I take off the dead hair it seems to be sticking out all over the place again in about an hour or so. As long as there is no scaliness or flaking it sounds like a normal moult. b-m

Hiya,

As long as the hair was loose and you weren't yanking it out then don't worry that's normal. Rabbits often moult in patches so they can end up with bald bits.

When the moult is really bad I 'pluck' the fur out too.

You'll find a comb works better than a brush to get the fur out.

Our Muffin is moulting heavily at the moment too and Caramel the guinea pig who lives with her looks like he's walked into a feather pillow fight most mornings when I go out and say hello:D

I have the same problem here too, and when the shed is too important, I forget the comb and 'pluck' too. Better that than having him eat his hair!;)

I agree. When a bun is in a heavy moult it's much more efficient to gently pluck the hair out than to use a brush.
