View Full Version : Huffing Sound & Peeing On Couch

Crue has taken to peeing on the couch ever since he found out he can get up there. It is a brown coloured microsuede and I'm assuming it is very close in his mind to his litter (soft brown coloured litter!!). We have tried putting tons of pillows on the couch to discourage him from getting up there, but then he even peed on the pillows! We have put plastic on it today to see if it makes a difference. (At least that way if he does pee, it's not making us clean it out of the microsuede.. it is not the best material to clean).
Any suggestions?
Also, as soon as i let him out of his hutch this morning, he ran about 6 feet, then stopped, and made 6 huffing noises in a row, then went back to his usual activities. I haven't heard anything from him since, but it worried me. Any thoughts?

He has not gone on the plastic yet but I am still wondering if I should be worried about the huffing sound that he made earlier, as I don't want him to have a respiratory problem and not do anything about it.. but I'm not sure if they make the huff huff sound out of emotion? I've never heard him do it before.

Weeing on the couch/bed is very common behaviour, I guess maybe cos those are the things that most smell of us humans. I'm not sure what the fix is though, maybe put a litter tray on their :)
It's difficult to tell by your description whether it's a normal noise or not. Rabbits do growl/grunt. If you're worried you could pop him down the vet for a checkup.

I wouldn't worry about the huff unless its a weezing to breath or something.
It's funny you mention this about the peeing, my boyfriend is so mad at me today because this morning my little bunny went pee on the couch. I don't make a big deal out of it and even said something like it's a old couch anyways. (I am the one who does the cleaning, we don't like pee or any kind of poop in the house by the way).
Anyways, the bunny is no longer allowed in that room where the couch is. The boyfriend sure was mad. :censored:  HA!

Moonshine used to pee on the sofa. She didn't just jump up onto it and pee, she'd have a look around and then get into the corner and stick her back end up, and then I'd pick her up and put her in her litter tray before she had the chance. She got the message evertually
I also agree with Tamsin's suggestion of putting a litter tray up there, just temporary, then start moving that tray to another nearby place, and then hopefully by then he'll have associated peeing with the tray rather than the sofa.

See, he is so fast to wee! I watch his bum and tail like a hawk, and the minute I see signs of him even THINKING about going potty, I move him.. but he's already started going!!
So far we haven't had any more wee accidents on the couch..

I posted about this exact same problem yesterday, Romy suggested a throw which helps with the whole cleaning process too  I've been watching Tammy and doing the same as you, swooping at the mere sign of her tail going up. I've caught her in the act a couple of times and put her in her cage but she just throws a strop when I let her out and goes back to couch peeing!
Today tho, Andy and I were watching her and kept thwarting peeing plans and in the end she went back into her hutch and went there. Fingers crossed she'll get the idea - we haven't had any accidents (not that they are  ) today!

 Happy to hear its working!!! They are little so-and-so's for weeing on the sofa! :D
As for the huffing, just keep an eye on him. It could have been burping? Rabbits do burp (a few or more in a row) somtimes which can be a little bit huffy. Take him to the vet if you really need to put your mind at rest but if he is running around like normal he sounds just fine and lovely!:D

Muppet went through the weeing-on-the-sofa stage too, I think it was a territorial thing.
I have a throw on the sofa anyway, so I just put puppy training pads underneath that for awhile to protect the sofa (and the throw can be washed anytime of course). It's very hard to spot them about to wee isnt it!  All I did was grab him and put him on the litter tray or, if I was too late, put him off the sofa in a huff.
I'm never sure if he got the message or figured he'd made his point and didnt need to do it anymore... But he's been good for months now.

He tried weeing in a corner he has NEVER wee'd in before this morning
So I added a smaller litterbox to the other side of that room JUST in case he thought he couldn't make it..
We're having him neutered this Thursday so if it is territorial marking, hopefully that will put an end to THAT..
No more huffing since that first occurance! Or any noise like it for that matter. maybe he just had some allergen all up in his nose or something..
