Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cataract gone red

Hi there

My bunny Manny has cataracts in both eyes, and we think he's pretty much blind. We noticed last night that one of his eyes no longer looked white/cloudy. It almost looked as though the cataract had cleared away - although I know this isn't possible. But on closer inspection his eye seemed to have gone reddish - not the bit that's usually white, but the iris that used to be brown.

We're going to take him to the vet on Monday, but he seems absolutely fine in himself. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? The white of his eye does look slightly bloodshot.

Thanks :?

It sounds like Uveitis to me. This is inflammation of the middle layer of the eye. He may need some abx/steroid eye drops

Thanks Jane ... as ever you were spot on. We've been to the vet's tonight, and he said it was uveitis and we have eye drops :D !

The good news is that the vet said this could actually improve his vision. The uveitis has made his lens pop out of place, so now although he can't focus the world won't look cloudy any more. We can see the back of his eye if we look closely  !

Annabel and Manny xx
