  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Pinworms

Over the weekend I've noticed a couple of pinworms in Shadow's poop [YUCK YUCK YUCK!!] I'm going to treat him and Kitten [as I guess it's likely she'll have them too though I've not seen any in her poop yet] but I was wondering.. they look so much like the human parasite threadworm - should I be worried? Can I get these worms from my bunny? As far as I've been able to research, they're a different species to the human parasite but I want to know! This is the one thing that REALLY grosses me out!

Don't worry...I'm 99% sure that humans can't catch rabbit pinworms.

It's wise to wash your hands thoughly after handling them though, 'cos humans can catch some other nasties from rabbits. (I always forget towash mine  )

Thanks, that's reassuring.. still gives me the heebi jeebies though!!

I know I should but I usually don't unless I've been cleaning them out, I guess some people find that icky but it's normal for me but you're right, I don't even want to risk it!!
