The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Dental bunny diet

I think Evo can now be classed as a "dental bunny" as his last 3 dentals have only been 6 weeks apart. He seems to perk up well after the GA, but I'd like it if the dentals were a bit further apart.

He can't have veg anyway, because it gives him a squitty tummy, but is there anything else I can feed him to help keep the spurs worn down?? As it is, he has a small amount of SS for breakfast (enough to just cover the bottom of the bowl) and about 10 pellets of SS in the evening. Apart from that, he has a few porridge oats for treats and unlimited hay - Oxbow timothy and cheapo supermarket hay are his favourites. Are there any types of hay that are particularly abrasive? Or any other "dry" foods?? He won't eat dried grass.

Fanks.

I read that grass is good as the cillica (sp) in it helps to wear teeth away. Don't know how true it is...or how relevent to Brit buns as it was an American site.

Poor Evo.

Hmmmm, I wonder if the Orchard Grass from Oxbow would be okay, as he does like that lots!

Oxbow Oat Hay is quite tough - long thick strands, so I'd imagine that would be quite wearing on the teeth. I feed that, mixed with Timothy. Only thing is I've heard Oat Hay is quite sweet, so can attribute to weight gain :?

I'll second that, oat hay is brill for teeth but is hefty in the calorie department:( the house rab book listed it second to alphafa:shock: :(

I have spoke to a vet who told me that fresh grass is the most abrasive you can get so better for the teeth.

The vet was the owner of The Willow Warren's wife.

Yes I think fresh grass is suppi
osed to be best. I'm thinking of growing some in trays. I'v started feeding mine 2tbs pellets each morning and evening and unlimited hay...I have tried a mix of hay but they have decided to only eat the expencive one! My vet seemed pleased with this diet. Oh I include a leaf of greens between them morning and night but I know evo can't have that. I reckon high hay low pellets and try to get some fresh grass.

hi, i was told my an american bunny specialist that its not WHAT a rabbit eats but How they eat it that helps to wear teeth down. They should eat in a circular motion and this wears the teeth. If the teeth are misaligned then this circular motion become less effective. Giving them food that needs a lot of chewing is good as it increases the amount of time it takes to chew. I would think hay is pretty good for that. Is it incisors or is it molars that he needs the dental on?

Does all green upset him or is he okay with grass? You could grass your own timothy grass for him.

I think timothy is meant to be nice and tough compared to the standard meadow hay type stuff.

It's his molars.

I've never tried him on grass, maybe I should try growing some. Our garden has more moss than grass, so I wouldn't be able to pick him any from there.
