Matilda - Giant bunny, arrived today

sgprescue

Mama Doe
Matilda arrived here first thing this morning. Unfortunatly because of the state she was in both me and Angela had to spend quite a long time up at the vets this afternoon cleaning her up. She is slightly overweight but in very poor condition. She is only 1 year old but because of her problems looks much older. She has bad mange mites all over and some of the scabs on her back end as a result were several inches long. Her entire underside and back end was covered in scabs, poo, urine and matted fur. Her genitals were badly swollen and the skin looked so sore  She was so uncomfortable she kept moving her back end and couldnt settle and on top of all this she had ear mites and blocked tear ducts. We gave her an ivomec injection and I cleaned her ears and flushed her tear ducts whilst angela made a start on shaving her back end. She looked so much more comfortable after she had been shaved and cleaned up. She was being fed big bowls of mix and kept in a small area in her previous home  We now have her on a much better diet and once the antibiotics, ivomec and skin cream kick in she will be a lot better. She has gone to stay with Angela for a bit until she is well enough to be spayed as she has a huge area for her to run around. At 9.25kg she is the biggest rabbit I have ever taken in to the rescue  . Any idea what breed she is?

Cheryl she's gorgeous

How long before she's fit to be homed?

Looks like a British Giant, only saying that 'cos she looked like Millie a BG I used to know

     She is beautiful!, thank goodness you have her in your care now, she is gorgeous

Well done!!

  Can't believe humans can do such hideous things - neglect is abuse. Well done on rescuing her and getting her more comfy and clean poor thing. You can see the difference in her already in that last pic. Bless her heart.

What a disgusting state her previous owners let her get into  Do you know who they are? Are people ever prosecuted for such neglect, it makes me so angry that rescues pick up the pieces and then the owners can just run out and buy another rabbit whenever they wish

Good luck to her, she's beautiful

awwww, she is lovely Cheryl:love:  shame the owners did not have any logic to see she had problems and greater space needs:(

She looks like a definate giant but does not look over weight to me, just a large dewlap. might be worth you asking Sue Dooley, found this for you, over 15lb is normal;)

Thanks for that link, she definatly looks much more like a british giant, than a conti, having not had many giant breeds in before (especially not one as big as her  ) I am not used to the different breeds. Although it is hard to tell from the picture she is slightly overweight and I would say she needs to loose around 1kg to be comfortable.
Her owners knew she kept getting a mucky bum but thought she was being lazy so they often put her in the shower, only trouble is they didnt wash around the genitals and the addition of water only made her matt up even more  I will go over to Angelas in a week or two to take more photos as she improves, she is such a sweet girl and didnt deserve to be treated like that :censored: She will probably be ready for adoption in a few weeks time as we need to clear up her problems before spaying her.

awwww, are you not tempted to keep her Cheryl;)  how old is she? I bet she can span the whole length of french doors:lol: she is truely stunning:love:

Awww, she is GORGEOUS! I find it so hard to believe that people can let their buns get into this condition!  I am SURE ou will have NO problem finding her a loving new home!

I totally agree, I used to have BGs and I now have a Conti.....and she looks MUCH more BG!!!:D

Heres another Giant link, again run by Sue Dooley, shes set up a Giant Rabbit Rescue at her home in Essex - so if you're short of space maybe Sue would take her in for you and she could get specialist care? (Not saying you can't give her the care she needs I just know a Giant bunny will consume more funds and resource than a small one!)

It makes me really cross that people can let them get into that sort of state - my cousin is a Vet nurse and she was moaning about this one woman that brings rabbits in regulary with Fly strike, all the rabbits are grossly overweight and this woman says she has no idea why they're getting fly strike :censored:

The previous owners of Teddy (my white bunny) did the same, showered him every few days to remove the poo and blamed him for being messy  and never considered it was their fault even after he got flystrike, but now I have him I've changed his diet and guess what, no poo at all on his bum, so hopefully some tlc and a change of diet will improve her immensely. I wish I had room for a giant, I'd have her in a flash, she's lovely

Some 'people' really are just clueless!!! It should be a legal requirement to pass a test and obtain a certificate, to look after ANY other living creature.

Glad this beautiful girl is now in safe hands, cant wait to see how she improves over the next few weeks. I love big bunnies....

The BRC actually do a Rabbit Health and Husbandry Exam, its not compulsary to take it but I have and now have a Certificate because I passed with distinction. I think you're right, every pet owner should have to take an exam like this, to prove they have basic knowledge. I'm not saying the BRC one should necessaryily be used as that includes some of showing questions, but take those out and include questions about neutering etc and you'd be well away.

I've worked (voluntarily) with animals for a long time but still put myself on a private, animal healthcare course, run by Loughborough College. It was only short, for around 4 days, and didnt cost a great deal, (I think it was less than £30) but you did get a certificate at the end. It was mainly based around cat and dog care, but was general enough to be applied to all animals. If only everyone had to do such a course.... until the law changes, all animal rescues are fighting a losing battle.

I now have a certificate to show people that I do actually know what I'm doing, and not just a crazy woman that has a soft spot for animals lol:lol:
