Some of you may know that I have a new job at Pets Corner.
I absolutley adore it, I have been asked to help put together a bunny neutering and vaccination leaflet, and to educate the other stores on bunny / g pig care.
We had a litter of bunnies bought in by someone who had been sold two "girls" by another pet store (nameless) Anyway, they were lionhead x dwarf lops. Absolutley adoreable, and as a result, they have all but one gone to a very good home.
One that hasnt been sold has been in sick bay. My manager noticed that she had a dodgy eye about 3 weeks ago, so we took her to the vet, and they said that it was a reaction to wood shavings, and said to take her off them and gave us some drops to soothe her eyes. So we did that for 10 days, and there was no improvement. She had also begun to have a mucky bum, and wasnt eating her food. Which I think was because she was feeling so poorly.
She then went back to the vets, and saw a different vet, who discovered that Twinkle has no tear ducts. Which is a common result of over breeding/in breeding.
She gave us a different eye drop, and some powder (Bio Lapis) to put in her water, and advised us to give her poos from healthy bunnies to feed her gut. Also, one of her back teeth arent growing straight, but without an x ray they cannot be sure.
She is a lot better on this treatment, but obiviously the store cannot sell her, but will give her to staff. One member of staff was going to have her, however with these problems, she cant decide whether or not to have her.
I am considering taking her on, now that I am no longer rescuing (long story) I have the hutch space and time to bathe her eyes on a daily basis, and I dont use wood shavings for my own bunnies. I have spoken to my own vet and they have said that she could have her back teeth removed, and they wouldnt cause any problems.
What I want to know, is has anyone else ever come across a bunny with these eye problems. Is it likely to be a lifetime of suffering for her? she still wants to play, and is so friendly...
