The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Barney is eating green stuff but not pellets

For those of you who have read about Barneys trauma's over the last weekend you'll no he has been very poorly.

His appetite has picked up significantly today and he's been nibbling on hay, dandelion leaves and coriander (finally got my hands on some). He's also had a little bit of porridge.

He is showing no interest in his pellets though apart from to have a sniff. I've tried his normal pellets, science recovery at various consistencies and his usually pellets sofetend with water. I know his mouth and tummy are still going to be sensitive I just wondered if a. I should be worried about it? and b. any ideas how to encourage him?

I even tried some of the recovery on porridge and he wouldn't touch the porridge till I'd made some without it.

Also wondering whether he's gone off it cos he's been syringe fed it all weekend and he might now associate it with that?

Any ideas much apreciated.

My lot will only take recovery formula from a syringe, they won't take it any other way. Also, when they've had GI Stasis, they start on green foods and hay first before they start on pellets again.

If he is eating other stuff then I would not be too concerned at the moment, it can take a while for bunnies to pick up again. Just keep a 'normal' bowl of them around for if he wants some and I'm sure as he improves he will start munching.

As long as he's eating something then I wouldn't worry too much. I guess you could try soaking his normal pelets and mixing them with porridge if it's the recovery he doesn't like.

If you're not already, you could add a sprinkle of probiotics to the porridge too.

Where could I get pro biotics from?

The vet or some pet shops. If the vet has it, you could ask for fibreplex which is probiotics with added fibre.

I think the recovery has probiotics added but it also comes seperately as a powder you can sprinkle on food.

Alice used to get regular stasis and I always found that making up porridge with science recovery and a bit of apple to sweeten it used to get her munching. Alice had hardly any teeth so I always used to blend her veggies and add softened excel pellets but when she was coming round for the first few days she would only eat blended veggies. I wouldn't worry too much if your bun is nibbling bits of hay, it can take a few days for them to get back to eating their full range of food and even longer to get back to the normal amount.

I would definately recommend Fibreplex from the vets. Reading the label its also supposed to make their digestion more efficient so will probably speed up the process a bit.
