Kidney disease

Thanks Jane :D
Do you have any experience of how long a rabbit can continue in reasonable health with kidney disease or is it a question of how long is a piece of string?

It really depends on the cause, how badly the Kidney's are effected and how well the Bun responds to various treatments.
I have had Buns in chronic renal failure (suspected to have been the result of a previous EC infection). They coped very well for approximately 8 months on injections of an anabolic steroid (Nandrolone) and Multivitamins. At first the injections were once a week. As renal function worsened injections were given twice a week.

There are many different causes of Kidney Disease such as EC, Kidney stones secondary to a history of bladder sludge/stones, cysts and abscesses. There are consequently different treatments and prognosis.
Christobel has carried out a successful Nephrectomy (removal of a Kidney). The Bun had a huge renal abscess and was very poorly. He went on to make a full recovery. Infact a few months later he had to be deplummed as he was so 'frisky'!!
