Pineapple Juice

I have noticed some of my buns having fur mixed in with their poops lately so I gave them each some pineapple juice as I've heard that has an enzyme in it that helps to dissolve hair balls and ultimitely can help to prevent GI Stasis.

My question is how much is safe to give them on a daily basis?

Thanks,

Brigitte

I usually give mine about 5mls although i dont give it daily.. their poops will soon tell you if they have had too much i guess. There was a discussion on here a while ago now about pineapple juice and it was suggested that unless it is un-concentrated that the enzyme wouldnt still be in it. Ive always given mine normal concentrated pineapple juice (the little cartons from tesco), and they love it and didnt cause any problems, not sure if it helped with the furry poos or not though. I did buy a pot of those papaya tablets from oxbow which are supposed to help but i no longer give them those daily either. They eat lots of hay/grass now and i dont see many stringy poos so i think thats the best option tbh.. mine are long furred and its done the trick for all of them  Sorry ive gone on a bit!!!

I think it just helps it along, it does not dissolve the hair.
High fibre does the same thing, but as a treat it's fine, my two love pinapple juice and the tablets. :D

Hi,

I am no rabbit expert but my bunny had GI Statis and a large furball inside him, at the end of last year.

I took him to a vet who specialised in rabbits as he was very poorly, and amongst other medication I had to give him 5ml of pineapple juice twice a day initially for about a week, then it went to once a day for another week, and then he told me to give him 5ml once a week.

The bunny with the hairball problem is a dutch rabbit but it spends lot of time grooming its girlfriend who is a lionhead!!!

The vet just told me to buy the supermarket brand of pipeapple juice, and my rabbit seems to quite enjoy it now.

Hope this helps.

I give mine an inch cube of fresh pineapple (including some of the skin as that is fibre as well as some enzyme in one go!) 2 or 3 times a week at the moment as they are both in heavy moults.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Since I'm from the US and not too familiar with the metric system, I'm going to ask a really stupid question here - 5 ml is 5 milliliters, right? According to the conversion I did online, it looks like that's only a couple of drops - just want to make sure that's correct.

Thanks,

Brigitte

so what happens in the end to the large furball inside him?

Hi,

When I first took him to the vets he put him in a box and did a fluroscopy I think it was called, like an xray without any trauma to the bunny, and the hairball was very clear to see.

The pineapple juice was given to him amongst the other medication as I was told it would help to break up the hairball so that it can be passed I presume.

The vet also told me to use the pineapple juice instead of the papaya tablets as it was more economical, I did buy some tablets as well but my bunnies arent keen on them, if anyone wants some to try please let me know as I have a tub of them here.

When I went to collect him he showed did another fluroscopy which showed quite clearly that the hairball had gone.
