Ovulation in females

Bionic Bunny

Alpha Buck
This is a strange one but I thought rabbit breeders or anyone who reads a lot about rabbits may know. I am a vet student and we have just covered some basic information about rabbits but the breeding information is a bit confusing. It says that females need a male around to ovulate which would suggest that they are induced ovulators but it doesn't actually use those words. If there is no male around will a lone female ovulate? If they do require a male does this affect breeding season?

They are induced ovulators, not sure why your book doesn't say that. There is no breeding season for domestic rabbits although pregnancies are less likely to go full term during the winter because of cold weather, etc. Wild rabbits seem to have seasons that are related to whether they have enough food, etc., to raise litters. If the mom isn't getting enough food she's more likely to reabsorb the litter.
