  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Dead Lionhead.....cause?

Bhm1712

Young Bun
my Friends Lionhead rabbit died 2 days ago, he wasa fine in the morning but by dinner he had started having massive amounts of diahorrea, not just sloppy, i mean liquid.... he stopped having diahorrea, but later on in the evening he collapsed and died whislt eating some food. Any ideas what might have caused this??? as he appeared to be healthy and happy.

the vest advised us to bring him in the following day but he had already gone...

It sounds like mucoid enteritis or Piosening, as estelle asked had he eaten anything he shouldn't and had he been vaccinated for VHD

no

as far as my friend is aware he didnt eat anything he didnt usually eat, and he had not been vaccinated for VHD, both buns were due to be vaccinated this month so pet insurance could be taken out aswel as keeping them safe

A one-celled bacterium, Coccidia, causes very liquid diarrea which can be picked up from unwashed vegetables or unwashed grasses in the garden that perhaps have droppings on them from wild buns, or even birds.
My bun LaRue had the same exact sudden symptoms a year and a half ago and it was Coccidia. She was given massive antibiotic treatment and came thru. All my greens I wash at least 2 times now, sometimes 3 times, inbetween drying in salad spinners, because I think there are other bacteria as well that buns can get from their greens.
