Nobivac Myxi Vaccine-U/D Vets Feedback

OMG

Can you keep us updated please Jane

I believe this may actually mean passive transfer of immunity such as with the live attenuated polio virus vaccine - it is still in use in third world countries because it is passed in faeces and due to poor hygiene is easily transmitted between people in villages. This way even those that weren't given the virus officially will come into contact with it and develop immunity in healthy individuals.

But if the vaccine is live some kids can't be given it if they live with an HIV positive person in the household or someone who's had a splenectomy etc as they have lowered immunity and they may actually develop the full disease.

I have spoken with the Veterinary advisor at Intervet (vaccine manufacturer) He was not aware of the warning being on the data sheet :? He will contact their International Department who will have details as to why that specific warning is there. But he thinks it is likely to be because no trials have been conducted to say that the live vaccine WILL NOT be excreted by vaccinated Bun and passed to another Bun. So if they cant proove (via clinical trials) that it cant happen they have to state that in theory its a possibility.
He will be calling me back later

A very nice (Rabbit Savvy!! :D ) Vet from Intervet called back. She said that the warning on the data sheet is because no clinical trials have been done to show that the Vaccine Virus (Shorpe Fibroma) does not effect in contact susceptible Rabbits. The SF Virus is transmitted by biting insects. So although it is theoretically possible for an in contact Bun to be effected it would be extremely unlikely to cause a problem. The virus is NOT transmitted via wee/poo/mucus secretions. Also Shorpe Fibroma is not a virus know to effect the European Rabbit.

The Vet spent a long time explaining how the vaccine works and that although its not as good as an actual vaccine containing the Myxomatosis Virus it was beter than nothing. She too was frustrated by the lack of research funds for drugs and vaccines specifically for Rabbits. She said it will get better as Bunny carers demands increase. So, go hassle your Vet at every available opportunity!!
