  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Am I doing the right thing? (Sorry another question)

Tango has cystitis and because of this his fur on his back end at the bottom of his tail is wet. I'm trying to brush this to stop it becoming matted. Is this right? Or is there anything else I should be doing?
I'm so worried about this even more so than I was when he had snuffles I don't want to do anything wrong.
Sorry about the questions!

I think you're doing pretty well.

You could try giving him Yarrow, it helps with urinary stuff. Might Cranberry help too?

If he has a wet bum, I'd be tempted to get your vet to, or do it yourself, to trim it to keep it cleaner and put some sort of non-toxic (and lick safe) Calendula cream on the inflamed area. You may be able to get some animal safe stuff in pet shops.

If he is weeing alot, I'd give him a bit of banana to help with the loss of potassium too.

This is all from my experiences with Guinea Pigs but I should think it applies to bunnies too. Hopefully someone with bunny experience will come along soon.

Thanks!
I'm probably ok I'm just a bit paranoid that I'm not doing it right. The vet said to go back on Monday if he hadn't got any better so I might watch to see how he goes. So far he's letting me brush him and I think it's only just started being wet.
Tango will love that I can give him banana (it's his favourite!)
