Just had a scare with Fizz in the garden(bird of prey)

Fizz and Bertie had been having a play in the garden, we bunny proofed the garden a week or so and the buns have been having great fun.
I was in the kitchen sorting their tea out and my hubby was out with Fizz, he started shouting there was a large bird that swooped into the garden after Fizz :( she's only a tiny girl and a bird of prey could of taken her  .. Fizz was spooked by this bird and hubby said it made a noise :? I wonder what it could of been ?
It was a tan brown colour and quite large. . I'm trying to find a site of photographs of birds of prey but can't find any :?

Could it have maybe been an eagle or hawk?
im not a bird specialist im hopeless but i know they are around a bit. Hope Fizz is ok xx

Also shows that bunnies should not run free in the garden without supervision, i.e. someone being in the garden with them. Just looking out the window is not enough. Only takes a second for a buzzard to grab a little bunny and fly off, although normally they kill them with a bite in their neck first. I also saw a fox walk through our garden in the middle of day and then easily climb over the 7 or 8 ft fence on the other side of the road.

It was most likely a buzzard, eagles are quite rare and don't tend to go near towns.

We have many birds around here, and are surrounded by fields so our garden is not secure. The buns live in fairly large encolsures anyway, but they only go on the grass in runs, and those runs are covered with constant supervision.

Glad your bun is ok.

possibly a sparrowhawk? My bro has seen them in his garden

Which ones will actually take the bunnies?

We have a similar bird that circles our garden and we are always out there when Ozzy is out there but I worry they'd come down even with us in the garden.

buzzards will take bunnies and they circle lots... very distinctive birds - much larger than a kestel and the tips of the wings turned up slightly as they circle...

I know we have had a sparrowhawk in the garden before (we didn't have Ozzy then) so I wonder if it is still the same one in the area.

Ozzy is never outside by himself.

wow thats scary!!! My mum and dad have a a hawk that comes in their garden for the birds, it doesn't even fly off if you try to spook it, quite frightening. They live in a very busy street too and only have a small garden.
Also had a lady on another forum who's bunny was killed by a stoat/weasel type animal(she wasn't sure) It killed one bun and the other survived. they were in a fox proof run at the time. she brought the remaining bun indoors and the following night she looked out only to see the creature in the run looking for the remaining bunny!!
We should be on our guard!!

Hubby has looked up at some pictures and he thinks it could of been a sparrowhawk.. Dread to think what could of happened it Andy wouldn't of been there out with her.

OMG so glad she is ok.
We have alot of herons round here,i see them diving into the water and snatching the baby ducks :( :( It really freaks me out, even when i go out shouting and waving my arms it doesn,t budge :(

Sparrowhawks are often in gardens, flying low between the trees. But they are probably not big enough to take a grown up rabbit. They could still injure it, though.

oohhh Karen ...we ve had birds of pray ...probably sparrowhawks in our garden quite a few times .... scary :?

Poor Fizzy shes been to the vets this afternoon for her vaccination and then the scare from the bird :( she seems fine in herself though and didn't seem to bother her to much..

Yes. my bet would be on a sparrowhawk. The buzzards around here are enormous and you can't mistake them for anything else.
