  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi, I am taking George for his Myxi jab this afternoon.
I'm sure I have read in the past that this should be given in two places on the rabbit, Is that correct???

I have two vets for George, one who is very bunny savvy but is quite a way to travel, and another who is just across the road.
I use the first vet for any surgery and would use him for any serious illness, and the other for routine checks and vaccines, because I don't always have the car to be able to get George to the more rabbit savvy vet.

I just want to make sure I ask the vet I am taking him to today to do the correct procedure when vaccinating him.
Thanks Sharon

When the myxi vac is given, it should be partly under the skin and a little bit (10%??) actually into the skin to give the best protection.
Some vets withdraw the needle a little to give the last bit and some vets put the last bit into the ear as the skin is thicker there.

From my understanding the correct way for the myxi vacs to be given is 10% intradermal ( which is in the base of the ear ) & the remainder goes into the back of the neck.

Some experienced vets give the intradermal bit in the scruff but i`m afraid i have no knowledge of this.

Thank you to all that replied, and Thank you Jane for the link.
The vet who dealt with George was a locum, but he was really good, and did the myxi jab as I hoped he would. :D He seemed fairly clued up on buns.
