Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Neutered Bucks nether regions - vets?

Rabbers

Mama Doe
Hi,

I have just been doing the buns bum check and my neutered boy rabbit's nether regions have some dark matter in the little pockets around his *boy apparatus*. I am not expert on these areas and wondered whether these pockets would have been where the testicles would have been and whether there is anything to be concerned that these areas have a little bit of dirt nesting in?

Help I'm not sure whether this is normal or not - if not i'll get him to the vets this morning!

Ah that'll be his scent glands. Some people clean them out but I think they can be left alone. Scent glands can attract flies so with it being warm and summer coming up it might be an idea to clean them if they smell. You can do this with cotton wool and warm water or a bit of baby oil.

Oh thank god for that! I had no idea what they looked like, but now i do!

What is it that gets inside them?! urrgh! Luckily his don't smell, i was just worried they were dirty

Thanks so much for getting back so quick :D

If they don't smell then I think you can just leave them alone. I think it's just waxy stuff. These buns like to worry us

So glad someone has asked this, I knew it was some sort of scent glad but its the same on both male and females, as far as I can tell. I used to clean my old buns out when she had a bum wash, but I havent dare touch the new bunnies, was never really sure if you were supposed to clean them or not, sometimes it looks very hard and the skin is stuck to it, I've alwasy softened it with warm water but was still unsure whether I ws doing the right thing!
