Pet insurance? Worth it?

Young Bun
Hi there, we are wondering if pet insurance is worthwile for our bunnies given the cost vs cost of paying vet bills.

I wondered if everyone has insurance or not and if so with who?

Thanks for your help!

Personally I'd say no, open a savings account and put the money in there. With the high excesses and monthly payments I stick to the emergency fund and credit cards!

i had pet insurance with petplan and when my little mate need it two weeks ago they made every excuse under the sun not to pay out. so the only winner was the company, also they will not cover most health issues.
a savings plan is a good idea, might try that myself, as i have just cancelled my insureance. :rabbit2:

i'm going to say pet insurance is worth every penny or at least it has been in my case

4 of mine are insured with pet protect www.petprotect.co.uk (you have to ring up for the bunny quote). bracken would be as well but she's too old :(

they have never once quibbled a claim for any of my rabbits and i have claimed a lot of money back from them. they paid out £900 for gus when he had a retrobulbar abscess and his premium hardly changed the year after

they have also paid out routinely for lola's eye drops for 2 premium years now and her premium hasnt really changed

admittedly frida & zeb are insured and i've never claimed for them but i still think its worth the £24 per month i pay in total for my 4.

i'm unsure of their exact dental policy - you will have to check with them for that.

There's no way i'd have been able to find £900 for when Gus was poorly. knowing he was insured meant we could take him to a specialist without worrying about the cost. :D

Well, having 7 bunnies, one with a dental and eye problem, petplan wanted an arm and a leg, and still wouldnt cover half the important stuff, I pay into a savings account every month, but try to pay for simple vet visits seperately, so at the minute I have about £600 in savings should anything happen. If I had paid this in premiums there would be no guarantee they would pay out, plus I would still have to find the excess :? :?

I put money aside each month. I wish I had insured my two but pet plan wouldn't cover them for anything they had already had treatment for (so any bouts of GI Stasis would not be covered).

I don't bother. Not for my 5. My vets are fairly cheap anyway, and my bunnies have only had treatment for GI stasis, teeth burring (pre-existing condition) and jabs, so I don't think these would be covered.

I have my two covered, I have never had to claim but would hate to be in a position where I couldn't pay for treatment.

My sister has four buns all insured and it has definatly been worth it for her, one of her buns has had his incisors removed, they started to regrow and her insureance paid for the removal, another of her buns just had a long bout of stasis, she had to go and see a specialist, the bun stayed at the specialist three nights, plus two weeks worth of medicine, all covered by the insurance, she wouldn't have been able to afford it otherwise! We are both with pet plan, they will cover them no matter how old they get as long as we keep paying, they will also cover any further tooth problems, she had to phone up and negotiate for the toothless buns but her poilcy states he is covered.

I think if you have more than four buns however you are probably best off just saving the money.
