  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Anyone get itchy while/after folding their bunny?

I have NEVER been alergic (sp?) of anything or any animal BUT Binik seems to make me itch after and while I'm holding her.
This sucks. I did buy the advantage flea killer but I still itch.
Why?

Hiya,

Be careful when using flea treatment on rabbits as only some are safe, check with your vet before you use anything brought over the counter.

People can be just allergic to specific types or animal so it's possible you are allergic even though you're not to anything else. I'd suggest talking to your doctor or chemist, they might suggest trying some allergy medicine - like the stuff hayfever suffers take. You could also wear long sleaves or a specific coat/shirt for holding her so that you minimise skin contact.

Or it could be Cheyletiella Mites. They dont live on us but can cause an allergic reaction if they bite. I itch like :censored: from them  Have you noticed any white scurf on your Bun?

Was going to say the same thing! I am the human guinea pig at the practice I locum at as I instantly start to itch and go red if I come into contact with cheyletiella mites!
If not this then probably just the type of fur she has :)

When Dad holds the buns he gets red eyes after a while and he just rubs them more and makes them more red, what is it with men

He seems fine with his 2 gobby pigs

 Samantha and the buns

Is it an albino bunny as over the years I've been doing rescue I've become more and more allergic to albino's especially while they are moulting.

The vet run was terrible the other day as I had 3 of them with me and was sneezing, itchy eyes, nose and face for hours after. :?

Doesn't happen with any other colour though so i think it's down to the lack of pigmentation in their coats.

I am allergic to my rabbits, but they don't make my skin itch. They give me hayfeever and asthma... :? I have to be careful not to handle them too much, but with some precautions and asthma medication, I am just fine. :D
