Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Smelly Poos

Hi

I have had my new blue rex, for a week now, he is 12 weeks old.
He does not eat much, it takes him all day to eat a bowl of food, and his poos are a little bit loose and smelly. And they are quite dark and shiny.
We feed him Rabbit Royale, Rabbit Mix, which he has been bought up on. So we have not changed his diet suddenly.
Do you think there could be something wrong with his diet.
We give him plenty of hay, were not giving him any greens yet, because that might make him even looser.
He is lovely and active and lively. He is more interested in whats going on around him than eating.
Could he be nervous, after being taken away from his brothers and sisters.
Do some rabbits eat less than others.

You could try reducing the amount of mix, and consider swapping him over to Science Selective or Allen and Page. I give mine pellets in a small amount so they're all eaten in about 15minutes.

I would defo slowly get rid of the mix. When mine arrived they were on mixes and their poos were loose, once they were on pellets they were much better.

I would also definately try & wean him onto pellets.

I used to feed Rabbit Royale, it is a very rich mix & i found it used to upset young buns tums & also older ones with more sensitive tums.

Right thanks.
My babies and there mum, are on pellets, the Excel junior & dwarf, pellet mix. So I will start introducing this to my new boy to.

could the smell be due to his hormones kicking in?

"boys with balls do do smelly poos!"

- that's not actually a quote... but it should be!
