questions about larger buns

willowflower

Warren Scout
some of you may know i bought dillion from p@h a year ago now (i know pet shop bun not very sensible but i fell in love) and i did ask all the right kind of questions and on the whole most of the advice was pretty acurate apart and it's a pretty big mistake the told me he was a cross neterland dwarf and he wouldn't get any bigger.

well he now huge (well bigger than i imagined) i take him to a pretty rabbit savvy vet only she was on holiday this week so i got a locum (nothing serious by the way was just a bit worried about his claws) well this new vet is like he's definitely crossed by one of the larger breeds of buns and they require specialist care. he made me feel totally inadequate as a bunny mummy was just wondering if he's right? is there anything i should be doing that i'm not my normal vet says he's perfectly healthy and although he is big he's not a giant.

he's around 4.2-4.4 kg is about 2 and a half feet long stretched out is that normal or is he just overweight have made an appointment with regular vet for when she comes back but any advice til then will be hugely appreciated

hi willowflower

have you got a picture of him? we have 2 conti giants that live with a dutch and a french lop who lives with a lionhead and 2 small-medium lops. we find the bigger ones are just that bit more laid back but other than that they are first and foremost rabbits. because of the weight issue you have to be aware of sore hocks (as with rexes for fur issues). except for eating more which goes without saying and needing larger exercise areas they are quite simply rabbits just a bit bigger!

ok here is a photo

and one of him length ways

this photo was taken when he was 8 months he's got a bit longer but not by much

he's obviously no netherland dwarf but i thought he was just medium sized pretty new to rabbits

Awww he's cute! He does look like quite a big lad, it does look like he's mixed with a large breed looking at his ears! As far as I'm aware larger breeds need no specialist care other than what Neil said. From what people say, the larger the bunny the more laid back and cuddly it is!

hi willowflower

I would very much like to "borrow" him for ten or so years!
His colouring would suggest there's some papillon in him, maybe?

I put this picture on about a week ago of Florence our 2 y. o. conti giant.
To give an idea of perspective I'm about 5'10" and around 14 stone.

Woah - he is a monster bunnie!!!

btw - why is that bunnie pink (in your avatar)?

The avatar is photoshopped..

That's 1 of the biggest bunny i have even seen..

Big rabbits require much the same care as smaller ones (although obviously they eat a bit more and need larger accomodation).
I wouldn't worry too much about what the vet said - so long as you are finding out about rabbit care in general then you will be OK :D

hi Small orange giraffe

how many he's do you know called Florence   ?
she really isn't that big compared to some giants I've seen.
and like rabl said Poppet has been photoshopped in pink and green, did the pink one 2 years ago before all the recent fuss about pink rabbits.

Neil: WOW! Florence is an amazing and beautiful rabbit!

sorry I feel like I've taken over this thread!
Florence is daddy's girl and I know you can't have a favourite when you have nine but if I did....
dillon is gorgeous too, I saw a blue papillon recently (very similar) which is now on my wishlist.

all i can say is thank heavens he's not as big as florence i'd never be able to lift him.
it's true what you say though he's totally laid back and lazy but he seems to prefer me to his lady bun he's a bit possesive
glad you liked him so you would say it's ok to keep going as i am?
he has planty space i've enclosed the whole garden for him and ava and i feed him twice a day
neil you mentioned sore hocks how exactly do i spot a problem  like i say i'm fairly new rabbit owner and i origionally thought i was buying a small rabbit so i'm on a pretty steep learning curve.

My rabbit looks about the same size as yours and mine doesnt need any special treatment or that.. so i wouldnt worry xx

Fudge my 'medium' sized bunny weighed in at 4.2kg last year though I think he may be a bit lighter now. He doesn't have any special care :D

thanks for all the help and advice like i mentioned taking him to my original vet next week when she comes back hoping to learn how to cut his nails myself. (he absolutely hates having them done and he's more than a handful when he sets his mind against something)

Hi Willowflower

About the hocks, just make sure there are plenty of soft places for Dillon to rest eg carpet, hay in litter tray etc. I guess bald patches of fur would be an indicator of a problem. To be honest I wouldnt too much about it, ours all run around on concrete as well as carpet and hay and we've not had any problems.
