Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Head Tilt ... or maybe not? Advice PLEASE!

Rosie Rabbit

Mama Doe
Sorry first of all for the long post. On Sunday night we discovered Rosie sitting in her pen hunched up with her head tilted to one side. Her body was leaning slightly to one side as well and her eyes were half closed. She looked uncomfortable and flinched when we touched her neck gently.

I've read a bit about head tilt and its causes and I immediately thought of that and a possible E Cuniculi infection. But after a few hours, the symptoms had disappeared and she seemed her normal self again.

If it was head tilt, it wouldn't just disappear after a few hours would it? The other thing I was wondering was that she was maybe dashing round her cage and run and had banged her head. Or maybe it was some kind of small seizure.

The other reason why E Cuniculi was at the back of my mind was that she developed a cataract in her right eye last May, fairly quickly over a period of a couple of weeks. I've noticed some creamy specks in that eye recently too. The other eye has a slight shadow, but more on the retina, not in the lens of the eye. She has seen a vet specialising in ophthalmology and he said not much could be done. The cataract may just be part of the ageing process (we think she's about 4 or 5 years old). She seems perfectly happy though and has adapted to her blind eye very well. It was only when she had this funny turn on Sunday that I thought the two might be linked and thought of EC.

She is seeing the vet tomorrow night and after reading a lot of posts on here I'm wondering if she should be tested for EC. I know over 50% of rabbits will test positive but understand there is a newer test which can test for an active infection. Or should she just be put on a course of Panacur - should it be the 28 day course (for a suspected active infection) rather that the 9 day course preventative treatment of Panacur Rabbit?

I realise no one can answer these questions definitively here, but a lot of you out there are full of good advice and are much more experienced bunny mums (and dads) than I am.

Any advice would be very welcome. Thanks.

I don't have any advice except I'd put her on Panacur anyway.

Hope you get to the bottom of it and wee Rosie's all better soon :)

Hi

I wouyld sugest you put her on the 28 day course of Panacur, the 9 day is a preventative...if you think she already has it it wont do her any good. The 28 day course is treatment for rabbits who have EC.

If you have any other rabbits have them put on the 9 day preventative course.

Hope she is OK for you.

Hi, so sorry Rosie is poorly. I'm sorry I don't have any advice but I hope she feels better soon.

I would suspect EC too. I'm currently treating both my bunnies for it - one on 28 day course and the other on 9.

Good luck at the vets tonight!

Nose rubs to little Rosie

Aww, thanks so much Gem, that's really kind of you :)

Vet suspected E Cuniculi, so we've started Rosie on Panacur. She has only recommended 14 days treatment in the first instance but we've to take her back in a fortnight, so I think I'll be asking to make it the full 28 days then.

Thanks to all who posted x

Glad to know you have an idea of what's wrong :)

Hopefully the panacur will sort little Rosie out :D

I've got a really strange feeling that I've met you on another forum :?

Glad your vet has started treatment and I hope it straightens (pardon the pun) Rosie out for you :D
