You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Help! Neutering decision!

Hi everyone

I am a complete softy. (Background Info - question is below)

I went with my mother-in-law to buy a budgie for her birthday and came back with a 6 month old Rabbit (who I named Barney). With Easter round the corner the pet shop had loads of baby bunnies which were selling like hot cakes but fully grown Barney was at the back of the shop in a dirty cage about the size of my arm. I just couldn't leave him.

So, I now have a big black house rabbit which is great. I've read loads of info on the net and although he runs a mile if I come within a meter of him he seems to be settling in ok.

Now here's my question: I know I need to get Barney neutered. He currently has 3 appointments booked for tomorrow and I just can't decide where to take him!

First quote: £78

2nd quote: £62

3rd quote: £50

Now obviously I am leaning towards the £50 vet. But does this mean i'm putting him at risk? Is it just a basic proceedure that any vet can do? It feels horrendous to bargain over the price of a castration but I've already spent a small fortune that I really hadn't budgeted (or budgieted) for.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Many thanks

Jenny

I pay £55 at my vets and thats considered expensive in this area.

You should ask the vets some questions to establish how much they know about rabbit care, price isnt really a guideline for experience.

See is they give pain relief, gut stimulant, what kind of suturing they use, how many rabbits they see, do they have pre and post op appointments included in the cost etc which should give you a good idea of which vets really know their stuff.

hi Jenny and Barney
we pay £40 in Blackpool for female neutering,
our vet is pretty
rabbit savvy and
he stitches them in such a way that they can't bite at stitches
easily.

We paid £55 for our little girlie to be done and £40 for the boys. What area do you live in? Maybe someone could recommend somewhere.

Thanks so much for all your help!

I cancelled the first two appointments so he now has one with the £50 vet - who happens to be closest to us which is great.

I am in...London. What a surprise hey?! Stupid how the prices differ. I have a consultation with the vet before Barney's op so I will make sure I ask all the right questions.

Barney says thanks too.
