Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Dewlap keeps getting wet from water bowl - dermatitis?

My Clover has a largish dewlap, and keeps dipping it into the water bowl. Neither of them will drink from a bottle, unfortunately.

I've noticed recently that a tuft of fur is often wet, and is looking a bit discoloured. Was just reading some stuff online, and read that this can cause dermatitis. I've just clipped some of the tuft of hair away, and it felt a little 'matted'. Is there something that I can put on the skin?? :?

Thanks for that. :) The only thing that puts me off about those is the worry that they might knock it over! :?

Mine haven't managed to yet! Actually, the only annoying thing is that I spill it all the time when I'm cleaning them out! Other than that, I think it's much better than a bowl, especially if you have lops who tend to get their ears wet with water bowls!

One of mine lays the side of her face in her bowl to drink and she does get a very sore chin. I pat her often with a tissue to absorb the wet after she has been drinking. When it becomes sore, I put Fucidin on it. I recently popped some sudocrem (baby cream) on it and it did act like a barrier for a while. However, as this is baby nappy cream, I wasn't sure if it was safe if she got some in her mouth.

I found that putting less water in the dish helped keep Maa's dewlap dry, although it needs filling more often unfortunately. If there's just a bit in the bottom, the rim of the dish holds the dewlap back as they reach down to drink.
