Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

EC Treatment question

cannonwoman

Warren Veteran
As many of you are aware Blue is at present being treated for EC.
He`s on a 28 day course of panancur, has just finished a course of antibiotics & on Wednesday started having steroid injections. Once he began the steroid treatment there was a significant improvement in him. He had one on Weds then one on Friday.
This afternoon he has become `weaker` again so i phoned my vet re: another steroid shot but he said "no", leave it another 48 hrs & then reasses :? That would make it 5 days since the last shot whereas the others were done 2 days apart?
The info which i took into the vets re: ec treatment said that steroids should be used in conjunction with panacur BUT not how often.

Please can someone help me out here? Is the vet right not giving another one yet or do i need to start pushing again?

Thanks in advance,
Su.x

I think with corticosteroids one has to be careful as they supress the immune system and can thereby make Bun susceptable to other infections. Also, they do have an effect on Kidney Function.

Did the Vet mention using Metacam again as an anti-inflammatory?

Well I'd give them a call again and ask. Its the inflammatory reaction to the EC spores in the Cental Nervous System that needs to be controlled I would have thought :?

Thanks Jane,
Have done :) I think my new vets are starting to get sick of me already! It just seems to be such hard work to get them to accept bunnies as `important`! :?
