  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

guinea pig mites - can rabbits get them?

Flori has got mites - she's off to the vets tomorrow as sporal d has failed to shift them, and so has gorgeous guineas shampoo

so far giddy & snowflake are showing no signs of them thankfully

can anyone confirm though whether guinea pig mites can be transmitted to bunnies? i really cant afford a mite epedemic at the moment :( and Gus is prone to (bunny) mites

thanks

sarah

I've never had the rabbits get them. They don't seem prone. But if they did ivermectin would sort it out, just as it does for teh burrowing mites piggies, and for fur or ear mites in rabbits. You can get it from Pets at home these days I believe.

thanks :)

you've put my mind at rest. i'll take flori pig to the vets just to be on the safe side but at least i know where to get the stuff if i ever need it

Audreys had mites before and Ive always assumed that they could be passed between buns and pigs :? .

As Louise says though, the stuff from P@H seems very effective and it may be a good idea to do them all now as a preventative- you get quite a few pippets in a packet. i cant think what its called now but its in a small cardboard box with the shampoo section and if you look on the back it says 'ivormec' or 'ivormectin'.

They are one and the same....mites affect all furries and some feathered creatures too.
