Tilly's been spayed!

Skye

Young Bun
My bun Tilly was spayed today. I picked her up about an hour ago, she seems quite fine. Very quiet, not intrested in her food though is this normal??

She is just lying in her litter tray but will have a look about now and again. Is this normal??

Sorry I'm a bit paranoid I know its quite a big operation and I'm worried.

She has done no pees or poos yet will keep watching for them!

Thanks for any advice

Karen x

Is she indoors? She should be as she will need to be kept warm until she has recovered from the GA. It is important that she eats and poos ASAP so try to tempt her with some tastey veg. Offer her water from a bowl as she may prefer this. She should start to nibble food later this evening and should also have poo'd.

Don't worry too much yet - it is normal for buns, especially girlies, to take a while to recover after a spay. Poppy was off her food for a couple of days, just keep trying to tempt her. Poppy didn't poop until the next day, but if Tilly hasn't pooed by tomorrow lunchtime I would definitely pop her back to the Vet for a metoclopromide injection and painkiller. This did the trick with Poppy and she picked up after that. Try the water in a bowl as sometimes this tempts them to drink. Is she an inside bun? Claire x

Hi, Try not to worry too much as she will be quiet and not move much for about 24hrs after the op, As the previous replies have said, just make sure she's weeing, pooing , drinking and eating. (though she'll probably just have a half hearted nibble now and again over the next few hours). Meanwhile, have a look at fluffiebunnies post Twinkle- being spayed - U/D WED 28TH which is in the Rabbit chat section. She's just gone through the rollercoaster of emotions that we all go through when our buns are poorly/having some treatment. There are loads of people here to help you. :)

Yes she's inside, I've given her all her fav vegs and water in a bowl and bottle no interest in anything.

When my bun Pippa was spayed she was very quiet for a couple of days and ate nothing until the day after her op (ie tomorrow) - I was able to tempt her with grated carrot and cucumber which is good for fluid too.

If she's not pooing or eating by tomorrow I'd take her back for more painkiller and gut stimulant

Yes, what a rollercoaster the last few days have been, but the thread I started might be of help to you.

Twinkle was so quiet the night of the op. Didnt eat/drink and not sure if she pood. Didnt move all night and I put her back outside the next day as she hates being indoors and she nibbled on a few bits but not much, and just now only two days later she is grabbing Science Selective pellets out my hand and just ate a whole large spring green leaf!! Also eating hay lots too!!

I know you cant help but worry, but everyone on here will help and support - of that I can be sure :D

Hi thanks for all the replies and advice.

My vet gave her a long lasting painkiller and gut stimulant, I knew to ask about them from coming on here.

Just got Tilly to nibble a tiny bit of hay and a tiny bit a carrot! She has done a pee and some poos, good healthy looking ones, still not had a drink, she's spent most of the night in her litter tray, but is now moving about a bit exploring her cage! She's in the dogs cage bed in the living room (she's normally an outdoor bun).

She's just knocked her hayrack off!! Will offer her more food again and see how that goes.

I read the other thread it's got some great advice on it, thanks. I'm still so worried!!

Thanks again, Karen x

Hi Karen it sounds as though she's doing fine. Wet some carrot and see if she'll take that. It's great that she's moving around a bit. Furby just flopped around until the following day!

She's just flopping aroung now! She hasn't eaten anything else, I'll try the wet carrot.

Thanks Karen x

Hope Tilly is doing well today - I didnt see Twinkle drink anything - rarely do, but the bowl water goes down so am sure she is getting enough water.

Dont worry too much - wetting her veg is a good idea!

Didn't get much sleep last night kept getting up to check on her!! Was really worried all day at work as she hadn't eaten much during the night. Just got in and she's eaten all her greens and some pellets! Yay!! Still not sure if she has had much to drink, the bowl and bottle don't seem to have gone down much! She's much more lively as well still lying in her litter tray but is moving around a lot more!

She keeps cleaning her stitches though, she isn't biting them or scratching them just licking them. I stop her when she does this is that ok? They look fine just a little red and inflammed is this normal?

Thanks again Karen x

I havent actually had a close look at Twinkle's tummy. She had internal stitches and I havent seen her even look down there  Since she wasy dont on Monday she has been quite nervous of "humans". Dont think she trusts us anymore. Hope she soon forgets.

Glad Tilly is still doing well. Its a nightmare time isnt it?!!

I know its terrible! Don't wanna go through this again thats for sure!!
She's just flopped out again after munching some hay!

Well you can be reassured if she is eating. She will be fine.

Think the bunnies that have had problems are the ones that dont get their appetite back and then other problems start.

A decent vet makes all the difference. My vets are good (only not good about keeping bunnies together  ).

I pondered on spaying Twinkle for a couple of months before I actually decided to go ahead. I posted on here and it was all the positive comments and statistics that persuaded me to go ahead.

There are always the threads about bad experiences. But I am sure there are more good news stories re: spaying than bad ones.

Which is why I am glad i posted a thread now about Twinkle. Might help others decide to spay or help them after a spay.

Yeah my vets are great, two of the vets have specialised in rabbits. I knew I wanted to get Tilly spayed and I'd read stories about it going bad but had also heard many stories of things going well and I trusted my vets completly thats why I went ahead with it. It doesn't make it any easier though, you just can't help but worry!!

Here is what Tilly will be doing tomorrow or Saturday!!

She's munching her veg just now! After destroying her cage moving things about, throwing everything everywhere!!

But she has had some squishy poos, is this normal??
