Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Buns Claws: When do you know to clip?

Rabbers

Hi!

I have had my two buns for 6 months (new to rabbits!) and was just wondering how you know when their claws need clipping? What is too long?

They have had a clip since I got them - at the vets. But I'm just not sure how you know when it's time?!

Generally rabbits claws should be as long as the fringing on their feet. When the claws extend past the fur they need a trim. If your rabbit has light coloured claws you can also see how far they extend past the quick (coloured vein running in the claw) which gives you a guide as to whether they need a trim.

Thanks that helps a lot. I'll have a look tonight whether they are anywhere near the fringing on the fur.

I hope I learnt enough from the vet visit to do it myself! I saw the other thread on here about clipping your buns claws - so I will have a go!!

Just to clarify the claw should extend a few millimeters past the quick, it should never be vut back to the quick for risk of rupture or damage.

Just a tip - if you do cut the quick by mistake (especially easy to do ona rabbit with dark coloured nails) have a little cornflour standing by to stem the bleeding.

I've also heard that if you shine a light through dark coloured nails that can also show where the quick is? I've not looked on Joey's nails though.
