baytril doses for rabbits???

Hi everyone

I haven't posted here for a verrrry long time as things have been very hard with both me and my OH being ill, moving house, having operations, etc etc I'm sorry I haven't been about.

I now have two bunnies - Lupin and Busby and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what sort of doses of baytril they've been given for their rabbits in the past.

Busby has snuffles and as we have just moved house and don't have a car I took him to the nearest vet to the house. He didn't seem to have much experience of rabbits to be honest. he gave me Baytril tablets, 50mg and told me to give him half twice a day. The back of the packet says 1x50mg tablet per 10kg of dog! Buzz weighed 2 kg at the last weigh in so this dose seems a bit much to me.

What do you think?

I've checked on a website about rabbit dosages and it says 5-15mg for a 2kg rabbit.

Thank you for your help!

I think you really need to try another vet, maybe you could phone around and ask for a bunny-savvy vet. Sorry I can't help with exact dosage but I think it's, as you say, 5-15mg per kg of bun.

I too think you need to consult another Vet. The oral dose of Baytril is 5-10mg/kg TWICE a day (Ref Textbook of Rabbit Medicine-Frances Harcourt-Brown)

my one is also in liquid form. So happen goofball is taking it right now. The vet, who's an true rabbit specialist, ask me to give her 1.2 ml every 12 hr. Goofball is a big bunny, she weighs 6 KG.

If it come in tablet form, how on earth would a rabbit be interested in eating it? Is it possible tablet is for dogs or cats? Anyhoo, ask your vet to switch to liquid form.

The recommended dose can be up to 20mg/day/kg (I believe) so that would be 40mg for 2kg, so . .50mg/day for a 2kg rabbit is a little higher but maybe there was a reason for it? I would just phone and ask your vet.
I don't think its unusual to give it in tablet form. Apparently it goes down quite well hiden in a piece of banana

Hi!

My bunny has just been prescribed 1.0ml per day in liquid form. I believe that is the daily dosage for a 2kg rabiit? Your bunny looks smaller than that?

Thank you all for your replies. I'm going to call my old rabbit vet in Edinburgh on Monday to ask his advice as he really does know what he's talking about. In the meantime I gave him 12.5mg this morning and will give him the same again tonight as I'm really not convinced by giving him 50mg a day. Buzz is definately quite a small bunny, no more than 2kg.

The vet said to mash it up, mix it with butter (!) and spread it on bread! I mixed it with some mashed banana instead and it went down a treat!

Thanks again,

 no waaaaaay!

Can you maybe see if your old vet can recommend one in your new area? He may not if he considers it unethical, but for the sake of your bun, don't take him back to the butter vet
