  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Seizures

I was by Sammy the other day, and he went into what I now believe is a seizure. I talked to my rabbit friend (who's a breeder and knows of this type of thing in rabbits) and she said it sounds like a seizure. Nothing can really be done now because we don't know if it's a problem that's resulted, or if it's hereditary. I contacted the breeder I got Sammy from, and he hasen't called me back. I'm calling tomorrow again. I'm doing research and I'm ruling in:

Hypoglycemia
Head Tilt

and ruling out:

Pasteurella
Diabetes

I did a lot of research, and am still doing some. Anyone expierence this with their rabbits? I called a vet and a rabbit specialist was supposed to call me back, but he never did. I called this vet my friend deals with and he said not much can really be done except putting him on antibiotics for Pasteurella-yet, from what I've researched, he's not showing those signs (nasal discharge, etc.). I haven't taken him to the vet because he hasen't had any more since Friday (Friday he had 2), and he seems fine. I want to do research first so I can tell the vet: "look, I've researched this and he's not showing signs of this, but is showing signs of this" etc. Anyone have advice?

Head tilt is an obvious symptom where the head is twisted to one side and the bunny has difficulty keeping balance. This can be caused by an inner ear infection (such as Pasturella) or the parasite E. cuniculi. E. cuniculi can encyst in the brain and could cause seizures so it may be worth reading up on Ec before going to the vet to discuss getting an Elisa test done on his blood (two tests taken two-three weeks apart to confirm a rising titre).

Also epilepsy is a possibility (dogs and cats can be epileptic).

Caz

P.S. Random thought for the day are you sure it was a seizure - i.e. complete loss of controlled motor function - was the bunny on its back shaking or could it have been an OTT binky?
