Back from vets - am i the worse bunny mom??

Dobbin

Mama Doe
Well yes we are back - Dobbin has gone down with snuffles again and abby says Twinkle has a respirtory infection rattling around. So they are both on antibiotics.

The reason i think i am the worse bunny mom is that Dobbin's lower teeth are starting to spike - she says they are not being worn down enough - i feel awful - am i the worse bunny mom in the world? i feel like it.     They have unlimited hay and toys to chew - she says the toys will have no effect on his lower teeth but i am to reduce his over food so he has to have at least 90% hay each day. Is there aything else i can do? Any hay which would be better? Is this it now is he going to have teeth problems? Is it to late?

I am sorry i just feel so awful.

Don't be silly! You are a great bunny mummy and to put your mind at ease, Clove's teeth are a bit wonky so even if she was fed 100% hay she could still get teeth probs as the teeth can't always been worn down properly, and thats most likely the case with your bun

Timothy hay, is generally good at wearing down teeth, especially the second batch which I think is tougher. Although, seriously, your buns are more than well cared for so don't worry.

Definately don't feel bad. Bunnies are very good at masking that anything is wrong. As for Dobbin's teeth, it could be hereditary that maybe his teeth are misaligned. Hugs for you & noserubs for your gorgeous buns

Oo, Sue, you are one of the best bunny mums I know (((hug))). As others have said, it's very possible that Dobbin's teeth are misaligned and just think, he will have a much much better chance of managing that with you then he would with an owner who didn't care  You took them to the vets the moment you thought something wasn't right - that's being a super bunny mum!

You mustn't doubt yourself xx

Awww Sue don't feel bad - you're a great bunny mummy :D It could well be that his teeth are misaligned. Poor Dobbin, guess it'll just be hay, hay and more hay from now on..... Did the vet mention burring?

no burring wasn't mentioned - what is that?

Thank you everyone for the lovely comments. I feel a bit better now Thank you.

They are both fine eating lots of hay and i am going to have some chocolate!!

Vets always jump to conclusions that the diet must be wrong if there are teeth problems as the majority of rabbit owners aren't that well informed and are feeding them incorrectly.

It always takes me a while to educate in a new vet to know my set-up etc then when they realise I am serious about my bunny care a great exchange of ideas starts (hopefully).

When I first took Fudge in to the specialists with his unusual symptoms one of the immediately obvious being his front teeth were worn at a funny angle (diagonally) and the specialist gave me a right grilling about diet and made me study an Excel poster he had while Fudge had his x-ray - he was pretty severe.

He assumed that poor Fudge had worn his teeth down like that chewing on a hutch because he had a bad diet (Fudge was actually a house bunny) but after hearing the other symptoms - sneezing after eating and drinking, persistant wheezing and struggling to breath (after a course of two different antibiotics) but with a clear chest and then when he got the x-ray back his whole demeanor changed. Fudge had an abcess in his nasopharynx slowly cutting off both his food and air pipes - it was slightly to oneside hence the uneven tooth wear :( .

Sometimes genetics play a major factor and no matter how excellent the diet a rabbits teeth will need constant attention because they don't line up properly.

However on the positive side - Athena had molar spurs which were initially burred when she came to us then we had her on a good hay diet and every check-up the vet noticed a slight re-growth of the spurs but never enough to warrent re-burring, she had three years of perfectly fine molars until she died.

Aw Sue glad you feel better, and hope poor bunnies feel better too. That is a lovely picture of them both in your siggie. <heads off to take more photos of own buns.....>

If you're a bad bunny mummy then I hate to think what other people are

Just encourage him to eat more hay, it's not easy though is it :? How about hay products, like cubes etc, would he eat them?
