Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

fur is matted

New Kit
We just got a bunny with very fluffy, fine fur. It looks normal, but there are big bumps of tangles near the skin. I can't seem to brush them out and they seem to get worse and worse. What am I supposed to do? We have only had him for three weeks and the previous owners mentioned that the bumps were just tangles, but didn't say I was supposed to do anything about them. Now our bunny is biting at the matted areas and seems to be bothered my them. Help! :(

Have you tried to gently cut them out? sounds pretty drastic but it may be the only way to get them out. be careful not to pull too much or you will make the skin sore. Aloe vera is very good for keeping long coats in good condition and tangle free, try putting some through the coat each evening when you groom. good luck., x Jess

I have one fluffy bunny and when she does get a mat I trim it out, even with regular brushing she seems determined to get mats. Thanks for the aloe vera tip will try it out :).

you must cut it out. As it's matted, they can't breathe, so those matted fur, which can happen on occasion, must be removed as soon as possible
