  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Alberta has had a bad reaction to her VHD vaccination

Middy

Warren Scout
She is currently at the vets... She hadn't eaten anything and has passed nothing today. Her temp is 40 degrees, which is pretty high. She has a big sore area with no fur on it - it's so swollen and red :( :(

The vet (who is good with rabbits, thankfully) has said it all falls in line with what can happen when a bun reacts to the vax, but due to her temp and the not eating, she needs to monitor her. Poor little bun :(

She was meant to begin bonding with Midnight tomorrow but there's no way we can attempt that at the mo... I'm so glad I am working at home today and could get her attention immediately...

Aw. :( She's in the right place and I'm sure she'll feel much better soon. Sending loads of get well vibes her way!

Thanks for the vibes Ali and Amethyst... :)

It's worrying as the vet said her temp was higher than a normal 'high temp' for a rabbit.

Anyway, must think positive!

Aw, thanks all. You're all fab.

I just got a call from the vet's assistant who said that they contacted the VHD jab manufacturer who said the reaction is rare. They have advised on care (which is the same as what the vet was already administering) and say that in the worst case scenario, she'll have to have the lesion surgically removed.

The manufacturer has offered to pay for the treatment as well, which is helpful (Alberta's insurance ran out a few days ago and was the next thing on my desk to sort out...!)

They are going to let me know at 5.30pm whether she can come home today... :fingers crossed:

My rabbit Patch reacted badly to the VHD jab too. He was really ill for 3 days. He was really lethargic and was not keen on eating. My vet told me that it is normal and he recovered and was his old self after 3 days

Thanks for your posts, Capel and kayw1.

Update – they are keeping her overnight as she isn't eating. Hope she'll be OK and not scared. My lovely vet is away for two weeks now so I'm hoping the replacement will be just as good.

:(
