Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Red, sore looking nose/face help please...

Ali - Loki

Young Bun
Hi

I'm not sure where to start, we are still treating Loki for snuffles and it's been 10 days on Septrin. The white discharge has mostly gone, but there is still sneezing and a wet nose, although today I noticed that the area just above Loki's nose and across that part of his face is red and sore looking and the fur there is really thin. Is it mites (I can't see any flaky skin), or something else? It resembles a burn and as he always turns round after having a wee to have a good old poke about in his litter tray I wondered if it could be this or something more serious...

Umm, it could be mites but it sounds more like a skin infection if it's red and like a burn (but then he's already on ab's). Usually with mites you'd notice hairloss/dandruff first though it could just be he has scratched it. It could also be a fungal infection.

The other option would be syphilis which can caused scabs around the face/genitals.

I think it's probably going to be one for the vet to investigate :)

It sounds like what my rabbit had at first she had slight discharge from her nose, after her fur come away on 1 side of her face and it looked all red and sore abit like small blisters. My vet gave me some fuciderm cream and some baytril inj to give cleared up in bout a week and half :)
