  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Good news for Buttercup

Buttercup is the rabbit i found on Friday, i thought she was a girl hence the name. He was given an all clear from the vets today. He's a healthy weight, teeth are all fine so i'm pleased. My family are now going to keep him and have bought his worming stuff to give and in the next month he can have his vaccinations and then be neuterd. We also renamed him Buttons :D

I also have a question about his food, i have been feeding him wag with is a mixed type one but the vet said that they have a habit of leaving bits mainly the good stuff and recomended the one the vet sells. This one has only got brown pellet food instead of a mix will he get all is nutrients just from pellets (fresh veg and hay aswell) :?

Hello

When bunnies dont eat all of the bits of their mix, they are missing out on certain parts of the diet - the fibre i think. If they eat all of it - then thats ok.

However, the non-mix type of food is recommended for bunnies that don't eat all of their mix, and because they're generally a higher fibre content and lower in protein. Everything they need is mixed together so each pellet has the same nutrition.

Do you know what mix you are giving him right now? Its should have an analysis on the packet. If you compare that to things like Science Selective, Excel or Allen & Page (and some others I don't remember).

If you do decide to change over his food - make sure you do it slowly over 2 weeks adding a little of the new and less of the old stuff each day - this will help to keep his tummy happy.

Oh see if you can get sample bags to see what he will eat too before forking out on loads of different food!

Thankyou we bought the Burgess supa exel pellet food and added it to some fruit and mix he already has. He has been eating some of the pellets through the last hour aswell as plenty of hay :)
