  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How do you work out whether a bunny has problems with eyesight? I'm a little concerned by Sugarplum, I've noticed she's not very adventurous. She hasn't worked out the catflap yet, couldn't get over the 12" high barrier to get out of the shed, and takes ages to jump down from the sofa like she's really unsure :?

Can you keep "testing" her with things? Placing food near her and seeing if she see it, putting toys down to see if she spots them etc etc??

Does a vet have any special tests for eyesight in bunnies??

I don't think it would work with the food as she'd smell it, but the toys are a good idea :D I don't know whether they have any special tests or not :?

Sugarplum`s a REW isn`t she? Most rew`s are partially sighted, my Kahlo is. He`s a little bit slower in finding new toys that i put in the hutch but in general he copes absolutely fine. :D He bombs round the run like a mad man so it obviously doesn`t worry him too much.

yes she is a REW I had Niamh who was a REW as well and she also had sight problems but I'm wondering whether sugarplum is worse :? They are easy to catch though as while the other rabbits are running away they run straight into you!

You can shine a small torch at each eye and see if the pupil contracts. If it remains dilated this indicates she is not receiving 'light signals' on her retina (back of eye) REWs tend to have poor Retinas
