Wax in Ears

Since Honey come to me last February she as had a problem with wax, at first the vet thought it was ear mites & had the injection for it, since then she as had about 4 injections for ear mites but now the vet says it is wax, which she cleans them out with a cotton bud & quite a lot of black nasty stuff comes out also before she gets them cleaned out she is shaking her head a lot. i have tried to clean them myself at home, i have the ear drops but i dare not go down as far as the vet in case i hurt her.
Does any one else's rabbit sufferers with wax & if so what do you do to keep it at bay.
Thanks for any help :D

It's easy. You drop something call cat wax (it's for cat but it works for bunny), it's a harmless liquid that will drip to the bottom of the bunny's ear.

You then massage the base of the ear for the liquid to breakdown the wax. Massage it for a few minutes. The excessive liquid will be shake by the bunny and bits of wax will come out from the ear as she does the "shake shake shake" with her head

Some rabbit just produce wax, my 2nd bunny, Happy Bunny does that.

I have waxy buns too    the vet gave me this stuff that is for cats but can be used on rabs, the nozzle on it was   Like you I was worried how far down to put it for fear it would come out the other end of my buns   Both mine hated it though so I have now tried this from bunnymail

Homeopathic Ear Drops Homeopathic Verbascum in cold pressed sweet almond and wheatgerm for the gentle removal of dirt and wax. Excellent for dry ear conditions. Ideal for all small animals.
EAR Ear Drops 15ml Bottle £4.50

They really do not mind this, I think they actually find it soothing too as I have no problems putting it in their ears and massaging the base of the ear :D :D The vet stuff used to make them go disco dancing the minute it went in their ears and then they would leave home for quite a few hours before they would wearily come forth for their supper   I think because the nozzle is sooo long, the buns think it is a thermometer coming their way and wonder which end you are about to insert it into

My vet always checks their ears when ever I am in and if they see any debris they give them a quick wipe out for me. When I asked what causes it she just said some buns are just prone to being waxy, I have always meant to write to the experts through the RWA to see if they know but have never found the time to do it

Before you put anything into your Buns ears I'd advise you ask your Vet to check them again to ensure the eardrum is intact. If it has been perforated, maybe from a previous infection, then putting anything into the ear canal could have dire consequences

Thank you all so much for your help, Honey is having the ear drops for dogs & cats "Canaural" it does seem to do the trick for a few days but with Honey having to go back every couple of days for her penicillin injections, the vet can keep an eye on her, but i will have a look at the ones Denny as put up for me, thank you Denny :D

Canaural is an antibiotic/steroid so should not be used 'now and then' but as a full course of treatment. Denny's suggestion would be better for routine ear cleaning :D

Hi there Holder :D

I was told about canaural by another member when I first started to have problems with a build up of wax with Eddie bun, when I asked my vet about it she advised against it as it contained a steriod. As being as Eddie was fit and well other than the ear wax she would not prescribe it, had he been unwell along side an ear infection then she would of gone with the canaural  However, just been through rabbit med cabinent  she did prescribe 'specicare Leo' cat ear cleaner. I phoned Tracy at rnpgrescue to check this was Ok and she said it was and that her vet Simon (rabbit specialist) had prescribed it for her before now :D but as I have said, I am now trying the Homeopathic Ear Drops and they seem to be more soothing to the ear and I have not had to attempt to clean them out, the wax seems to dislodge itself now, probably from the sweet almond and wheatgerm oil which many aromatherapists use :D

Thanks jet again Jane, i didn't know that it was antibiotic/steroid drops as the vet never said :( I will not use them again, & Denny i have ordered the drops from Bunnymail, Thanks again :D

canaural is horrible stuff, I used this on oli in the past when he had problems with his ears when I first got him and it made it WORSE not better.

The best thing is to get some non-steroidal ear cleaner from the vet or pet shop. The idea is to fill up the ear canal with the cleaner and massage the base of the ear so that it floats the waxy debris to the top, and then bunny will shake it out and you can wipe it away. This also eliminates the need for poking cotton buds down into bun's ear, which is unpleasant for bun and dangerous as it can push wax further down the ear canal. I have used this method on Oli with great success. ht

Thanks bunny-mad, i know what you mean i must tell my vet as well, each time i take her the vet uses the canaural drops before she uses the cotton bud, with the cotton bud she does get a lot of nasty stuff out but i dare not use the cotton bud as i might hurt her.
