Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Rabbit smells

unalakey

Mama Doe
My new rabbit 'Charlie' has an unplesant smell about him. I thought it was just the smell of the animal rescue on him but the smell is still stong (i got him last Friday). He is currently in the small playhouse(Hickory) and he is not littered trained. Today i put some vinyl tiles on the floor as i am presuming the smell is his urine which is very strong. Does male urine smell stronger than a females  as Lily my other rabbit does not smell although she is littered trained. He is (apperently) nuetered and i am presuming he is just marking his new territory(?) Any ideas? He has an appointment next week at my vets for his Jabs and to check he is definately nuetered. Would strong urine smells be a sign of illness :?

Hi, Im not sure. I have noticed the last little whille tht my hands have a 'smell' when I come back in from the buns, although I can't smell anything off them when I am handling them. I thought it was maybe having Harly having probs cleaning himself (after having myxi, he has bad breathing) but the vet says no their coats r both in good condition, so I'm thinking perhaps it's maybe oils in their winter coat, or the extra bedding I'm using (this is jst me guessing.......), not sure if tht would explain urs thp. Hopefully sum1 better will b on soon 2 advise :)

I haven't noticed MJ's urine smelling anymore than Pippas. Could he have a urine infection or something which would make it more pongy than normal?

Hi Kayjay, I will ask the vets when i go, he seems bright in himself, he is eating well and drinking ok, he enjoys free time in the garden and is quite active, he jumps really high when binkying  but i have noticed he licks his lips alot :?

My un-neutered young buck smells waaaaay more that our spayed doe. I just presumed this was down to the fact that he is has not been de-plummed yet!

Benji's wee was very strong just before he was de plummed, he would also give me a lovely shower of wee every morning too  now its the same as Bella's,

I think that my unueterd rabbits have had a stronger smell but I couldn't say for sure.
Unpleasant smell can be a sign of illnes sometimes so get your vet to give him a once over when you go and if you are worried about him for any other reason then take him sooner.

young rabbits less than 2 yr. old do have some smell. And male rabbit has a stronger urine smell than female.

Thanks for your replies :) I got Charlie from a rescue that dosent really specialise in rabbits, mainly cats and dogs. They only had three rabbits in. Charlie was the only male and they stated he had been nuetered, but they only had been told this by previous owner who gave Charlie up due to moving house. He is only 1yr old and does look to have been de-plummed. He is lovely even if he is abit stinky
