Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Missing fur

Hi everyone,

Not sure if anyone else has ever experienced this, but a few weeks ago Sooty lost all the fur on his chest all the way up to his chin. :(

My sister took him to the vet for me (unfortunately work won't let you escape for pets!) and the vet gave him some antibiotic cream to rub on twice a day, however it got worse and he lost more fur! As the vet didn't know what was causing the fur loss she was quite baffled so just said to keep trying the cream for a few more days. As he didn't have mites or a skin infection, just complete baldness. :(

Anyway, he ended up having an injection and the fur has started growing back now, but the vet never determined what was actually wrong and what caused the fur loss.

Has anyone else experienced this with any of their bunnies and did you manage to find out why it happened?

I'm just worried it might happen again, but i've have no way of preventing it. :(

Something similar happened to my bunny but much much worse and I had to share it with you. She had a lump removed and the shaved patch never grew back, we had steroid cream to rub on it, various injections but nothing worked. She then started to lose hair in clumps but not down to the skin and these clumps grew back white even though she is dark grey. The vets were baffled and spent 6 months doing various test and skin scrapes until they found the answer - she has a condition which I can not remember the name of (!!) that normally affects cats and there are only 6 other rabbits in the world with the condition so my bunny is unique! She now has 3 bald patches on her body which do no affect her and apart form that her health is perfect. I always think the steroid cream had something to do with it though.
