  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Head movements?

Cookie&Twix

Alpha Buck
I was watching the new bun, Biscuit closely last night and noticed that when resting his head moved slightly from side to side, as well as his eyes. It seems like he has no idea that he is doing it. I plan on mentioning it to the vet when he goes for his neuter, but would appreciate your thoughts.

Oh, meant to say that it is more pronounced when his head isn't up against the side of something.

Thanks! He's the bun that showed up at my house (well, my nan brought him to me as a rescue!) the other day that I mentioned in your other thread! He is rather gorgeous! I hope that he & Twix will get on once he is snipped & vac'd)

What colour eyes does he have?

Is that what they call scanning Tam?

Yep :) It's usually associated with animals with red eyes - their vision is not as good and the movements aids in depth perception. I've also heard of it in buns with red-brown eyes like himilyan buns have.

However, it could also be a symptom of a nurological problem (e.g. from EC) and as you can't tell when it developed (whether the bun has always done it) it would be best to get it checked out by the vet.

Thanks Tam! I made a point of watching Twix this morning as she is a REW, but she doesn't do this. I will certainly mention it to the vet when we see him. Off to look up EC, lol!

Not all REWs do it. The albino gene also effects eye sight so it's a result of that but I guess the level of vision impairment varies between bunnies.

Here's some EC info - http://www.houserabbit.co.uk/rwf/articles/ecuniculi.htm

Don't let it scare you serious effects are very rare and treatment is simple & cheap.

The vet will probably check the eyes and do a couple of tests for other neurological symtoms. Diagnosing EC needs a blood test but sometimes treatment is just given as a precaution anyway.
