Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sweep/temperature

Alpha Buck
Sweep recently had a dental - some spurs on his back teeth. He seemed much more enthusiastic over his pellets as a result.

However last night he was totally disinterested although happily grazing on hay.

Today I just felt he was not quite himself. The vet checked him over but found nothing (including his teeth) until he took Sweeps temp. 104.

Now the vet seemed to think this is outside the 'normal' range (he consulted his book to confirm). Sweep has been given a dose of baytril plus anti-inflam.

His poops are okay - not sure about weeing as we have two rabbits.

Any ideas please?

Thanks
Cara

According to Frances Harcourt-Brown's book 'Textbook of Rabbit Medicine' the normal temperature for a Bunny ranges from 101.3 to 104F so Sweep's appears to have been the upper end of 'normal'

The dental he had might have triggered a little inflammation around his tooth roots making it uncomfortable when he eats hard food. Hopefully the Metacam will calm the inflammation down. Meanwhile try softening his pellet feed with warm water.

Thanks Jane.

I am taking him back to the vets today, so will see what they say.

He has eaten a cabbage leaf. But...I still feel he is not his usual self. It is so difficult when you cannot see anything obvious. I am not sure he is not 'shuffling' around rather than his usual energetic self?

Back from Vets.

Sweep's temparature has dropped from 104 to 102.6. I think this is a significant drop? Is this so.

So, we don't know what is wrong with him - but the baytril does seem to have had an effect.

We are continuing on oral baytril for 5 days.
