Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bloomin heck. Nell now has a sore eye..Advice please

My poor little Nell who I have been posting about over the last week with her recurrent colic, low white and red blood cell counts etc etc now seems to have a very sore left eye. :(

I noticed it was weepy and shut when I came home from work. I think it was fine until I added lots of new straw and hay to her hutch though I can't be sure. There is a possibility that I have poked her in the eye. Ouch

She is feeling sorry for herself. I have bathed it in boiled warm water which seems to have helped for a little while. She just helped herself to the salad bowl though is otherwise feeling horrid. She is not eating hay or her pellets at the moment.

Any advice? What could have happened? She had a dental last Monday so I doubt anything there. She also had an xray at that time so I don't think she could have an abcess and her roots were fine then. Hmmm, have I hurt my bunny? It doesn't seem sticky though her eye does look dry. She can open it but seems to prefer it closed.

Sorry, I have only just seen this. I would take her to the Vets as IF a bit of straw has scratched her cornea it may get infected, especially as she currently has a low WBC count. The Vet will be able to use a stain on the cornea to see if there is any sign of damage/ulceration.

Thanks Jane. Will book her in this morning. It is still closed and uncomfortable looking but she has eaten a bit overnight.

Poor Nell. Hopefully some abx drops/ointment will make her sore eye better very soon

no wishing to scare-monger but if a bunny's eye looks even slightly weepy its best to take straight to the vets

Gus had what a thought was a bit of an eye infection last xmas - it turned out to be a massive abscess behind his eye and the vet thought he might need his eye removing

its only because im an ultra-paranoid mother and that i took him to the vets as soon as it was weeping that he got treatment in time for it to work

best to be safe than sorry - it probably will turn out to be an infection or a scratch but you cant be too fussy imo - sending vibes for little Nell - hope her eye gets better soon :)

Well I got Nell to the vets first thing this morning. She has had a full set of examinations in the last week so I knew it was unlikely to be anything more serious.

She had a bit of straw lodged in there. So I definitely poked my sick bunny in the eye to add insult to injury :( . I can't believe I missed the bit of straw when I was bathing it. It was small though. Her eye was a bit gunky too so she had it flushed and has some antibiotic ointment to put on twice a day. I can do all sorts to my rabbits which doesn't make me squeamish,.... but eyes..... :?

This all serves to make me an even more paranoid bunny mum. Honestly, its getting out of hand now.
